The former Mamelodi Sundowns star scored his first goal as Toronto FC hammered Simcoe County Rovers by 5-0 in a Canadian Championship encounter on Thursday.

The 22-year-old scored with a well-taken first-time shot inside the box, as he perfectly timed a low cross by Prince Owusu, who was also on the scoresheet.

The former DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season impressed as he was also involved in Toronto’s fourth goal scored by Jonathan Osorio.

Mailula has struggled to find his feet at the Major League Soccer (MSL) outfit after his much-publicised move from Sundowns in July 2023.

A lack of playing time at the Canadian side also saw Mailula lose his place in Hugo Broos’ Bafana side.

Mailula, who earned a rare start in Thursday’s win featured for the entire match, and will be hoping that his goal sparks a rich vein of form and a return to the national team.

Toronto will return to MLS action on Sunday when they travel to Orlando City in an Eastern Conference clash.

After nine matches played, Toronto occupy fifth position in the standings with 13 points.

Mailula’s side find themselves five points adrift of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, who are top of the standings but have played one more game.

Kick-off is at 01:30 (SA time).
