Victor Boniface opened the scoring for Leverkusen from the penalty spot in the 25th minute to hand the hosts an early lead.

Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka doubled the lead for the home side by scoring a crucial second goal in the 60th minute.

Budding 20-year-old attacker Florian Wirtz then grabbed a sensational 22-minute hat-trick to seal a first-ever league title in emphatic fashion.

Impressively, the title win sees Alonso’s side clinch the league title without having lost a game.

Nigerian attacker Boniface grabbed a career-high 18 goals for a single campaign while highly-touted Wirtz scored his 17th goal across all competitions.

Leverkusen's players celebrate the 2-0 lead during the German Bundesliga soccer match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and SV Werder Bremen in Leverkusen.

However, the man who will have grabbed all the headlines is Alonso, who in his first-ever managerial role has led Leverkusen to shake their “Neverkusen” tag to win a first championship in their nearly 120-year history to emerge as the most outstanding young manager in European football.

Alonso’s achievement on Saturday will rank among the great managerial landmark achievements such as Jose Mourinho’s breakout Champions League win with Porto.

Having wrapped up the league title, Leverkusen have five league matches remaining to finish the season undefeated.
