Mamelodi Sundowns had taken a crucial lead at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday as Themba Zwane struck in the 54th minute after Lucas Ribeiro Costa failed to convert a penalty in the 10th minute.

Pirates though drew level when Patrick Maswanganyi dragged the Buccaneers back into the contest from the spot in the 71st minute.

Mofokeng was introduced off the bench after the goal and scored a superb 94th minute winner.

Riveiro admits he wasn’t planning on bringing on the 19-year-old at that stage of the match, but was thrilled with the outcome, as the Bucs defended their Nedbank Cup title and secured an MTN8 and Nedbank Cup double for the second season in a row.

Riveiro told SuperSport TV after the match: “We didn’t expect to use him (Mofokeng) when we were not leading.

“Unfortunately we conceded a goal, but it was our intention to keep the pace up all the time, with Deon Hotto, Monnapule Saleng and Rele (Mofokeng), to stretch them as much as possible.

“We had opportunities and didn’t capitalise, and what a goal!”
