NEWS: Legendary football manager Sven-Göran Eriksson dies after cancer battle

Former England, Manchester City and Leicester City manager Sven-Göran Eriksson has passed away at the age of 76 after losing his battle with cancer.

Eriksson, who was only diagnosed with the disease at the start of the year announced in January that at best he had a year to live.

As a player Eriksson played primarily as a right-back in his native Sweden, but it was as a manager that he made his name. He was the first non-British person to manage the England team who he led to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during a five-year spell in charge between 2001 and 2006.

Aside from the England national team he also managed Mexico, Ivory Coast and The Philippines. He also led 12 different clubs and won a total of 18 trophies.

Confirming his passing the Eriksson family posted a message that read: “After a long illness, Sven-Goran Eriksson died during the morning at home surrounded by family.

“The closest mourners are daughter Lina; son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky; father Sven; girlfriend Yanisette with son Alcides; brother Lars-Erik with wife Jumnong. The family asks for respect for their wish to mourn in private and not be contacted.

“Condolences and greetings can be left on the website www.svengoraneriksson.com.”
