OPINION: Sundowns is Killing South African Football

Patrice Motsepe is using his thick pocket to weaken opponents under the guise of strengthening his own team and that has resulted in PSL talent going down the drain.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen Mamelodi Sundowns bullying other teams in the transfer market at the expense of PSL football. In the wake of Lebohang Maboe’s signing, let’s take a look at how Patrice Motsepe, Pitso Mosimane and his previous coaches have managed to buy success using desperate agents to exploit ambitious footballers.

We all know how they won the 2013/14 league title after having last tasted success in 2006/07. The Brazilians bought 54 top players and loaned out almost half of them to other teams but they were not allowed to play against their parent team, which helped the so-called small teams compete against the likes of Kaizer Chiefs but struggle against Sundowns. After a countrywide outcry by other teams, their fans and analysts, Dr Motsepe allowed his loanees to play against his team but he is now reverting to his old tactic of buying talent from other teams to bench them in order to play against weak opponents.

Sundowns has killed so many promising careers in the past and you can’t blame a player who is being advised by his agent to join a team that will pay him five times what he’s getting at a small team even if he warms the bench. Cuthbert Malajila used to score for Maritzburg United in those famous 1-0 wins against Sundowns and the Brazilians decided to buy him. Where is he now?

Cape Town City had beaten Pitso Mosimane’s men in all previous three meetings while they still had Aubrey Ngoma. Guess what Sundowns did? They bought Ngoma and they won the next two encounters but is there still talk of Ngoma deserving a place in the Bafana Bafana team?

Maboe scored the Maritzburg United opener in their 3-1 victory over Sundowns in last season’s Nedbank Cup semifinals and now they’re buying him to compete against Hlompho Kekana, Andile Jali, Oupa Manyisa, Tiyani Mabunda, Lucky Mohomi. Do you think he is going to play? The guy recently made his debut for Bafana Bafana and I feel the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament has to wait another five years now to don the national team colours again.

We all know that the decision to sign Sibusiso Zuma, Andile Jali and Benedict Vilakazi upon their return from overseas was to stop them from re-joining Orlando Pirates. If you’re disputing that, what did they do for Sundowns? Did they even play regularly as they did for Pirates? Would Zuma have rejected a whopping R250 000 salary from a mining mogul in 2008? No.

The Platinum Stars team which won the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout double in 2013 had Mogakolodi Ngele and Lindokuhle Mbatha. You know what Sundowns did to those players. Where are they now? These are just a few examples of players that were killed by the Yellow Nation.
