BALOYI’S VERDICT: ‘Spiderman’ picks his Player of the Season, gives his expert thoughts on Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

Amakhosi are fighting to finish the season in the top half of the DStv Premiership log, which is usually not the battle you would expect a premium side like Amakhosi to find themselves in.

Hollywoodbets' Brand Ambassador Brian Baloyi has his observations and summed up his verdict for the 2023/24 local football season as the DStv Premiership is about to draw curtains.

‘Spiderman’, as Baloyi was affectionately known in his heydays, has not been impressed by the efforts of his former club, Kaizer Chiefs, where he spent over a decade.

Amakhosi are fighting to finish the season in the top half of the DStv Premiership log, which is usually not the battle you would expect a premium side like Chiefs to find themselves in.

The Glamour Boys’ have so far scored a low 25 goals and conceded 28 and their goal difference sits on a negative balance and have so far registered 11 defeats – the most among the teams in the top half of the table.

“The club that has disappointed me the most is Chiefs, without a doubt. They have been very inconsistent, again, very disappointing performances by key players.

The most would be the changing of coaches in the past two seasons, and there is no way the team will be stable,” Baloyi told this publication.

“Pirates [on the other hand] towards the end of the season started showing glimpses of the standard that they have shown last season.

“At some point, they were shooting blanks and then they came up again and they are in two finals in one season just like in the previous season.

“Stellenbosch have also been very consistent from last season to this season, even after losing some of their players in their squad, they managed to replace them with youngsters,” Baloyi added.

As the season draws towards the end, prominent among a number of conversations is that of the PSL Football of the Season.

Last season, the debate was between Mamelodi Sundowns’ Teboho Mokoena and Orlando Pirates’ Monnapule Saleng.

In the end, Mokoena took home the gong, and this time around, Baloyi is of the view that the coveted individual prize is to be heavily contested by players from these Gauteng giants.

Patrick Maswanganyi, Orlando Pirates

“My Player of the Season would be Patrick Maswanganyi, without a doubt, let’s see who is going to challenge him for that. I am divided between him and Ronwen Williams.

“Sundowns will always have a few players who will impress, but the one player for me would be Themba Zwane. He carries the team, including the national team,” Baloyi concluded.
