DStv Premiership: Cavin Johson predicts bright future for Kaizer Chiefs sensation Wandile Duba

Head coach Cavin Johnson predicted a bright future for academy graduate Wandile Duba after the attacker scored a sensational goal to inspire Kaizer Chiefs to a win over Golden Arrows.

Wandile Duba of Kaizer Chiefs celebrates goal during DStv Premiership 2023/24 match between Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium.

Head coach Cavin Johnson has predicted a bright future for academy sensation Wandile Duba after the attacker scored a wonder goal to inspire Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday.

Duba scored as early as the 11th minute when he took a touch before curling in an audacious effort inside Arrows goalkeeper Sifiso Mlungwana’s far post.

For the 19-year-old attacker, it may signal him announcing himself to the DStv Premiership stage and a sign of a promising career.

“To judge him on one game would be premature, but to judge him on the training sessions and the mentality and the attitude he’s displayed at training then he probably has a long way to go [bright future] with Kaizer Chiefs,” Johnson said post-match.

“He just has to keep on cutting the cloth and if he stays humble, I think he’ll be a good striker.”

The win is the first of the calendar year for Johnson’s side after struggles in front of goal for the Soweto giants who will be aiming to build momentum from Tuesday’s scrappy win.

“We played a lot better in the first half, where we held onto the ball better and it was only in the second half where we didn’t have possession as much,” Johnson added.

“We always try to win the ball back from the opponent and if we have the ball, they can’t score.

“So, we try to do that consistently and sometimes football doesn’t allow you to do that because the opponent is cleverer than you in certain situations on the pitch.

“In patches, we didn’t do that, and we have to do it more like we did in the first half where we didn’t lose possession.

“Even when we did lose it wasn’t the player who lost it, who won it back, but another player and that gives the team confidence.

“For sure, I am going to work on that. We’re going to get it right.”

Chiefs next face rivals Orlando Pirates in a highly-anticipated Soweto derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
