FRESH WOUND: Former Kaizer Chiefs & Orlando Pirates star Lehlohonolo Majoro still bears the pain of never winning the MTN8 in his heydays

Lehlohonolo Majoro is one of the select few players who have turned out for Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, both of who dominate the MTN8, but were unlucky to never be in a top-eight winning side.

The Buccaneers and Amakhosi share a combined total of 27 MTN8 titles, with Chiefs being the record holders of the competition dating back to its inception in 1972. The Sea Robbers claimed it 12 times while Chiefs are 15-time champions.

Having spent half a dozen years at both clubs and played five MTN8 finals – Majoro was unfortunate to never be in a winning team and that scare still cuts deep, he reveals on Izinja zeGame.

“I’ve won everything in South Africa except the MTN8. Now I am the ambassador. I always tell the guys that at that time I was still playing I was going to have the MTN8 trophy as a girlfriend.

“But now I have it as a wife because I travel with the trophy everywhere we go, I get to touch it whenever, but it is not the same. The fact that I have never won this trophy still hurts me,” said Majoro.

‘The Major’, as he is affectionately known, is regarded as one the best goal poachers of his generation, having rattled the net numerous times, falling only nine strikes short of reaching the 100-goal milestone.

Majoro is of the view that his goal tally would have been better had he undergone development earlier on in his career, which is why he wants to empower the strikers of tomorrow. Majoro is chiselling out a plan to equip and arm young strikers with the arsenal they will need when stepping up to a professional set-up.

“Look out for MESSA (Major Elite Soccer Strikers Academy) I want to focus on strikers because being a striker in the past, I’ve seen how we struggle, we always complain that our strikers score 10 or 15 goals a season. And I understand that they try by all means to score goals,” Majoro explained.

“I was also playing, I know how I tried to score goals but I never got enough practice to do the finishing. I believe that repetition is one thing that sharpens a person.

“The more you do something, the more you get used to it and I’ve discovered that there are certain techniques that we as professionals cannot master. Not because we don’t want to but because we never practised it.

“If we can try and teach the young strikers because I have never seen an academy that focuses on strikers only,” the former Bafana Bafana striker concluded.
