Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi applauded the performance of Andile Jali despite substituting the player in the 0-0 MTN8 semi-final first-leg draw with Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Jali had a poor game by his standards and was unable to effect the outcome of the clash at the Orlando Stadium before being withdrawn for Bongani Zungu on 54 minutes.

The playmaker was kept largely subdued by the Pirates midfield, and Mngqithi explained that his withdrawal was tactical.

The Brazilians boss said on FARPost: “We just wanted to inject a bit of intensity, to improve the speed of the game.

“If you look at our second half, there was a big improvement in terms of our passing game and the number of passes.

“But he [Andile Jali] played very well and had very good moments in our build-up.

“But substituting him was sorely because we wanted to add pace to the game, which is why we brought in players like [Marcelo] Allende, players like Gaston[Sirino].”
