Mngqithi expressed his surprise at the rapid shift in his career. The veteran mentor was elevated to the club’s top job as the head coach after the Rhulani Mokwena’s unexpected exit.

Mokwena was axed by Masandawana after he led the Chloorkop-based outfit to a seventh successive Premiership title.

“I was genuinely shocked,” Mngqithi admitted in an interview.

“I anticipated that there was a strong chance I’d remain at Sundowns because of the club’s past support for me and my family.”

The former co-coach detailed how he was unprepared for the change. “I never expected this. It was a complete surprise. I prefer not to elaborate on the specifics as it was an unexpected twist, a coincidence of sorts.

“As we neared the start of preparations, everyone was in the dark about what had transpired.”

Mngqithi, who was initially in negotiations for a new assistant coach role, found himself thrust into the head coach position due to unforeseen circumstances. “I was in the final stages of negotiating my assistant role when the situation changed abruptly,” he said.

“I didn’t receive the call I was expecting, and suddenly I was asked to step up.”

Despite the unexpected turn of events, Mngqithi emphasised his commitment to Sundowns.

“I’ve now signed a four-year contract with the club. I’m dedicated to this role and ready to take on the challenge,” he confirmed.

Mngqithi’s new deal reflects his readiness to lead Sundowns into the future, a testament to his resilience and adaptability in the face of sudden changes.

Downs’ focus will shift to the MTN8 semi-final against Stellenbosch FC where the first -leg will take place on August 28 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
