In a candid analysis, former Kaizer Chiefs striker, Siphelele Mthembu, pinpointed the club’s recent struggles to a fundamental loss of identity due to the frequent changes in coaching staff.

Mthembu, who excelled under interim coach Cavin Johnson at Platinum Stars in the 2012/13 season, expressed concern over the absence of a clear philosophy and playing style at Chiefs, attributing it to the constant managerial shifts.

“Chiefs is not a hard club to play for, but the pressure from top to bottom, the quick demand for results without establishing a consistent culture and playing style, has been detrimental,” Mthembu told iDiski Times. He emphasized that successful teams like Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and SuperSport United understand their philosophy and required player profiles, a stability that Chiefs currently lack.

Drawing attention to the eight-year trophy drought, Mthembu argued that the pursuit of immediate success has led new coaches to overlook the necessity of building a solid foundation. “Youngsters do well, and then they aren’t there. There’s no balance to create a clear system, bring everyone together, and establish a foundation,” he explained.

Mthembu’s insight delved into the historical excitement surrounding Chiefs, emphasizing the need to rediscover the club’s DNA. He criticized the interference in coaching selections and the subsequent instability, advocating for a return to basics. “A scouting team to monitor desired players, focus on younger talents who can become the pillars of Chiefs in the future. Find the Chiefs DNA again with stable coaching leadership,” Mthembu urged.

He highlighted the bygone era when Chiefs showcased an exhilarating style of play, attributing the recent challenges to the introduction of varied coaching styles that have disrupted the established system. Mthembu’s solution centred on establishing a stable leadership structure, one that allows a coach to implement a successful and consistent playing system.

As Chiefs gear up for their next DStv Premiership clash at Dobsonville Stadium against Moroka Swallows, Mthembu’s insights serve as a poignant call for stability amidst Sunday’s original Soweto Derby and the broader challenges facing the iconic South African club.
