A career plagued by injuries and disappointments, yet Grobler remained one of Mzansi football’s favourite sons. Grobler, son of the great Les Grobler, began his long career at Platinum Stars under Cavin Johnson in 2007 at the age of 19.

“It’s emotional, I’m doing something I love since I left school,” Grobler told SuperSport TV. In the 2020/21 season, Grobler finished as top scorer in the league having scored 16 goals. His first goal was scored in a 3-1 loss to Free State Stars in November of 2007 when he was still at Platinum Stars.

This season, Grobler has scored nine goals and is tied with Peter Shalulile of Sundowns, the same man he was fighting for the Golden Boot in that memorable 2020/21 season.

It remains to be seen whether Grobler, 33, will reach the level of Nomvethe at 123 goals, a record which has stood since 2018.

With Gavin Hunt at the helm at his current club SuperSport United, Grobler will want to help the team qualify for the CAF Champions League as they lead the race for second spot, five points clear of Pirates, Richards Bay & Chiefs.

Still to play Chiefs and Pirates in the upcoming weeks, and already out of the Nedbank Cup, SuperSport United and Grobler will be desperate for positive results in those games.
