Hollywoodbets Brand Ambassador Teko Modise has laid out a challenge for DStv Premiership players, advising the likes of Orlando Pirates stars Patrick 'Tito' Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng to keep a keen eye on the ongoing UEFA Euros in Germany.

Modise drew comparisons to Spain and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, saying Mofokeng might just have to model his game on that of the 16-year-old sensation.

Mofokeng is one of the most highly-rated South African players following a breakthrough season with the Buccaneers.

The 19-year-old was a prominent feature under Jose Riveiro, winning the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, and is also in contention for the DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player awards.

The Premier Soccer League will present the much-anticipated award ceremony this Sunday.

“The maturity of that boy (Yamal) is something, with Mofokeng as well… he is playing matured football, surprisingly so,” Modise told members of the media.

“I just hope that all the guys who have done well this season will watch the Euros to see what it is that they can improve. It would be so sad to see Mofokeng playing so well this season and then the next season he disappears.

“Even ‘Tito’, playing the way he did this season and then he is a benchwarmer. Aren’t we tired of speaking about Themba Zwane’s consistency? We need someone else. If we have a pool of consistent players, it helps the national team and we need players to be consistent for coach Hugo Broos to select from,” Modise added.

This past season, Yamal played 49 games for Barcelona across all competitions and had a hand in 13 goals. Mofokeng, on the other hand, has registered a 10-goal contribution from 36 games.

“At the end of the day, the numbers count. I’ve always said you can’t play 32 games and you scored twice and assisted twice but you are an attacker.

“Your contribution needs to count and those are things of the game that one can improve. If you score four this season, next season just add two,” Modise said.

“That will make you a better player and I hope with the Euros playing, footballers will be watching. Strikers should watch the strikers instead of watching midfielders.

“I’ve never understood a midfielder’s favourite player being a defender. It makes no sense because you need to model your game and look at how other people handle the pressure in the position that you are playing,” Modise concluded.
