Pirates left South Africa in early July for their Spanish pre-season tour at the Marbella Football Centre, where they played against Plymouth Argyle from England, Sevilla and Granada from Spain, and Al Sadd from Qatar.

Over the four games, the Soweto giants secured one win, two draws, and one defeat.

Despite their recent successes in winning the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup in the last two consecutive terms, the Sea Robbers have finished as runners-up in the league during the same period.

Speaking at the unveiling of the new Buccaneers’ jersey in Johannesburg on Monday, Monyane acknowledged the team’s slow start in the league and emphasised their determination to improve and aim for the top spot this season.

“As a team, we have objectives and sit down as a team and say, this is what you want to achieve (the league),” Monyane said.

“And looking to go into a new season, one of our weaknesses I can say in the past two seasons was us starting the season slowly.

“We hope that this season and we know working towards it, we start the season on a high and we will actually collect those maximum points.”

The 24-year-old revealed that their trip to Europe was instrumental in addressing mistakes from the previous season and setting clear objectives for the 2024/25 campaign.

“We are looking forward to rectifying those mistakes. And that’s why we went to the pre-season to work on those things.

“And as a team, we sat down during the team cohesion, team meetings to say, look, we need to start the season on a high.

“As much as for the past two seasons, we managed to win the NTN8, but look, we actually need to do better and do good in the league.

“And we wish to kickstart the league on a high and finish it off strong.

“I said, it happened in the past two seasons. We are number two on the log, and we’re looking forward to being consistent.

“We don’t really want to go too much on the opposition teams, but we’re looking forward to improving ourselves and knowing where we’re very lag and where we are strong.

“So, yeah, we’ll be rectifying that.”
