Midderndorp replaces Englishman, Dylan Kerr, who was dismissed following a poor string of results this season. Swallows FC had initially appointed senior player Musa Nyatama on a caretaker coach basis while they were still in search of a new head coach.

Midderndorp brings a wealth of experience to the team having also saved Maritzburg United from relegation consecutively in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.

Swallows FC will be the fifth local side [Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic, Maritzburg United & Chippa United] Midderndorp has been tasked to lead, and his highest log finish was 2nd in bizarre circumstances after his Chiefs side led the season from start only to lose the league in the last 30 minutes of the 2019/20 season.

Swallows FC will be hoping that the German can turn their season around. Midderndorp himself has not had much joy since arriving in the country as far as trophies are concerned. He has won only one trophy, the SAA Supa 8, with Kaizer Chiefs in 2004.

The birds currently sitting in 13th spot, two points off the automatic relegation and playoff spots currently occupied by sides who have made their coaching changes earlier in Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune United.
