Desh Parthab highlights a few stats you should keep in mind before taking your midweek DStv Premiership including Kwame Peprah’s home form, Peter Shalulile’s stunning scoring record and more!

DStv Premiership

The past weekend’s round of fixtures went to defences with seven of the 12 clubs in action keeping clean sheets. The fixture which certainly turned a few heads was a relegation bout between Swallows and Baroka with Dylan Kerr’s men coming out on the right side of a five-goal thriller. Impressively, Swallows have only been outscored in the league by just four top-flight clubs since the turn of the year.

That fixture was Kgoloko Thobejane’s last as the head coach of Baroka (he will take charge of the MDC side going forward), which means that only 4 top-flight clubs have not seen a managerial change this season.

On the other end of the log, Mamelodi Sundowns could potentially win a record-extending 5th successive league title, if they can avoid defeat against Cape Town City. Masandawana will surely come out all guns blazing following their shock CAF Champions League exit.

With that being said, here are a few players to keep your eye on!

Magical Marques

Hugo Marquees has kept three clean sheets across his previous three away league outings. In fact, he is yet to concede on his league travels in 2022. The shot-stopper has been in sensational form for his side – no top-flight club is on a longer current unbeaten streak than Cape Town City in the league. The Western Cape outfit has very much been the form side of 2022 and has taken an impressive 18 points from their previous 8 league outings.

Peprah takes aim at Chippa

Kwame Peprah has bagged five league goals this term for Orlando Pirates and they have all come on home soil. Only two top-flight players have a higher home individual goals to team goals ratio than Peprah, illustrating his impact at the Orlando Stadium. In his previous home appearance, the forward bagged a goal against Simba SC which put them through to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederations Cup (following a penalty shootout). Peprah welcomes a Chippa United side who have kept just a single league clean sheet on their travels this year.

Shalulile’s statistical stunner

Mamelodi Sundowns have been a cut above the rest all season long. Peter Shalulile has been delivering the goods through this campaign and has personally contributed 21 of the club’s 50 league goals. To put things in perspective, Shalulile has bagged more goals than seven top-flight clubs. The talisman comes into this one with back-to-back league hat-tricks and will be one of only three top-flight players to have been directly involved in 50% or more of their club’s respective goal tallies if he continues in this form.

Arrows aiming to heap more misery on AmaKhosi

Only Baroka (18) have conceded more goals than Golden Arrows (14) have since the turn of the year. A total of six of those goals came against the league’s highest goal scorers, Mamelodi Sundowns. Nevertheless, Abafana Bes’thende have seen over 40 shots taken against them across their previous four league outings. The KZN outfit did keep a clean sheet in their previous league fixture and come up against a Chief’s team that haven’t found the back of the net across their previous 3 league outings.

Luthuli’s luck to run out against Sea Robbers?

Only Cape Town City (9) and Mamelodi Sundowns (8) have scored more home league goals in 2022 than Chippa United (6). Siphelele Luthuli (G1 A2) has been directly involved in 3 of those and needs to replicate his home form on their travels if they are to continue their ascent up the DStv Premiership table. Luthuli comes up against a Pirates team that have conceded 2 goals in back-to-back home league fixtures.
