Chiefs spurned a golden opportunity in the 11th minute. Pule Mmodi got the ball inside the box and just had Darren Keet to beat, but he blasted it over the crossbar.

City took the lead in the 19th minute.A magnificent cross into the box was deflected to the edge of the box, the cross came back in and Van Heerden rose to win the header and knock it over the line.

The Citizens were looking the more dangerous of the two sides and almost doubled their lead ten before half-time. Darwin Gonzalez with did well on the left to get his cross into the box. Juan Zapata slipped around the defender but couldn’t keep his effort down as it over the post.

Soon after, Chiefs equalised through Ashley du Preez. Du Preez ran on to a brilliant through ball from Mduduzi Mdantsane before the pacy striker buried the ball into the back of the net.

Eric Tinkler’s side almost doubled their lead when Taahir Goedeman ran onto a bouncing ball on the corner of the Chiefs box and slammed a first-time shot over the head of Brandon Petersen, who was caught in no-man’s land, but the shot went high over the crossbar.

After escaping that, Chiefs came close when a dangerous corner was flashed across the face of goal but no one was there to complete what would have been a simple tap-in.

With ten minutes to go Christian Saile, won the ball just inside the box and thrashed a shot on goal, which Keet did well to save with his legs.

Peterson did well for Chiefs to get down low and save from Thabo Nodada after Chiefs had hit the post. That near-miss would not come back to haunt the Amakhosi, who snatched victory with a 94th-minute winner.

New signing Edson Castillo was in the right place at the back post to turn in a lovely cross from Saile.

There was still time for Molefi Ntseki’s side to escape a massive scare when Jo Pacienca’s thunderous strike hit the crossbar and bounced back into play with the Amakhosi having to make a couple of last-ditch interventions to keep City out on the follow-up.
