Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane was on Wednesday conferred with an honorary doctorate by higher education institution, the University of Johannesburg.
Mosimane joins the likes of Jomo Cosmos owner Jomo Sono and Kaizer Chiefs founder Kaizer Motaung on the exclusive list of former South African footballers who have received this particular honour.
“Today, excitement is in the air as UJ confer an honorary doctoral degree on Pitso Mosimane, one of South Africa’s most celebrated football coaches.
“This honour recognises his exceptional contributions to the sport and his commitment to excellence and innovation.
“Mosimane’s contributions extend beyond coaching; he is a vocal advocate for African football and has significantly impacted the development of young African players,” the university posted on X.

Other recipients of honorary doctorates in football include veteran administrators Irvin Khoza and Danny Jordaan, who serve in the Premier Soccer League and the South African Football Association respectively.
Sundowns owner and current Confederation of African Football president, Patrice Motsepe was also conferred with an honorary doctorate by the University of the Witwatersrand in 2017.
Mosimane, who remains the only SA-born mentor to win the CAF Champions League on three occasions, will celebrate his diamond jubilee on July 26 – two days after being honoured by UJ.
