Former Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo has opened up about his decision to join Algerian side CR Belouizdad in a lucrative transfer.
Mayo, who recently signed a three-year contract with the Algerian outfit before being unveiled on Friday, had previously been on the radar of South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns in previous seasons.
In his first interview with CR Belouizdad’s media department, the 25-year-old Bafana Bafana player shared several reasons for his choice.
“The negotiations with the president went well. The president himself was a lovely guy, he came to South Africa, he came to convince me to come to the club and I looked at the club with the history of the club and everything,” Mayo said.
“And I saw it’s one of the big teams in Algeria and that’s why I’m here today joining the team. The president was good and we spoke about the negotiations and everything went good.
“And I think for me it’s to go further and enjoy the family (CR Belouizdad) that I’m joining right now because the president is a wonderful president, they have a good relationship with the president and he welcomed me well into the team so I am grateful to be here.
“I chose this team because I have interest in other clubs, they have interest in me but I chose this team because I love the team and it’s a great team and you know the great people with the lovely city of Algeria and the people in the city are very welcoming so I chose CRB because I love red and white.”
Mayo expressed his excitement about contributing to the team’s success and embracing the new challenges that come with playing for The Reds.
“They must expect Khanyisa Mayo, a goalscoring machine, someone who’s going to work, someone who’s going to be loved, someone who’s going to love the family.
“Everyone who’s going to be excited to watch each and every game so to the fans I can’t wait to meet you guys and support you in the field and I think it’s going to be a great season for CRB and me.”
