Sundowns have now won eight of the last 10 campaigns and boast of a total of 17 titles across all eras (since 1971), followed by Amakhosi, who have 12. Soweto giants Orlando Pirates are third on the list with nine titles.

Sundowns’ players roared in celebrations at the FNB Stadium after the match and took their jubilant mood into the dressing room.

Tashreeq Matthews was named the Man of the Match after netting two goals against Chiefs, taking his tally to four goals in eight league games since joining the club.

There was no shortage of champagne at the FNB Stadium Downs players, led by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and Neo Maema, popped the bottles in front of their section of supporters.

Club captain Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane, who now has collected eight league gold medals, is a favourite among his teammates and Downs fans, who have coined a catchy song after him – a chant that has become the anthem in the stands in the dressing room.

‘Mshishi’ will be given the last to lift the title in the last game of the season against TS Galaxy. The game is expected to take place at the Mbombela Stadium on May 28.
