The 2023/2024 Premier Soccer League season might have just produced the best goals ever seen in a league campaign since the advent of the league in 1996! Take a look at the video compilations of these absolute crackers.
Goalscoring continues to be a problem at the highest level of the South African game. In 240 games, 488 goals were scored in the league, calculated to 2.03 goals per match, which is a disappointing return. Orlando Pirates striker Tsegofa Mabatsa finished the season with 16 goals for both the Buccaneers and Swallows FC, clinching the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot Award.
However, in terms of the quality of the strikes, this must be the finest collection yet in 28 years of the Premier Soccer League. There were absolute “worldies”, many of which could easily make the shortlist in the 2024 FIFA Puskas Award voting process. YouTube channel “Locked Down Spectator” compiled these stunning goals in several videos, evidence of the quality catalogue of net-bursters.
What is remarkable is that, whether teams struggled for goals generally or did well in front of the net, everyone from champions Mamelodi Sundowns to the relegated Cape Town Spurs contributed quality strikes.
