Real Madrid became the only team to win back to back UEFA Super Cup finals since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, when they beat Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
Both teams started with a 4 – 3 – 3 formation, with Real Madrid opting to leave Ronaldo on the bench for the interim. Zinedine Zidane played Bale on the right, Isco on the left, and Benzema as the attacking forward. Mourinho opted for Lukaku as the centre forward, Jesse Lingard on the left, while Mkhitaryan was on the right.
Real Madrid held their defensive lines well, not allowing free interplay for Lukaku and Pogba, eliminating dangerous attacks initially. United pounced on counter attack opportunities but couldn’t convert the chances into goals as Lukaku missed an open net.
Madrid opened the scoring through Casemiro, who hit the crossbar minutes before he had another opportunity to find the back of the net. Isco doubled Real’s lead 7 minutes after half time after a neat one-two gave him space in the box before he buried the ball past De Gea.
De Gea was on song but his defence was left in sixes and sevens exposing the best keeper in the world to some practice shooting for Madrid.
Manchester United brought on Marcus Rashford and the youngster soon made his presence felt, with his silky footwork, newly signed Matic took a powerful shot just outside the box which Navas parried into the path of Lukaku who, this time, coolly finished to bring some hope into the United hearts.
Cristiano Ronaldo came on late into the game and was welcomed by a roar of excitement as one of the best players on the planet faced his former club.
It was all she wrote as the final whistle blew and Real Madrid won their fourth UEFA Super Cup title.
