Spanish La Liga: Gameweek 23 Preview

Real Madrid continue to dictate the pace after their second consecutive 1-0 after Karim Benzema’s strike gave Real a derby win over Atletico Madrid last Saturday. Barcelona’s Ansu Fati became the youngest player to score a brace in La Liga with his two goals in the first half of the 2-1 victory against Levante on Sunday. Getafe climbed up to fourth after a convincing win at Athletic Bilbao, going level on points with Sevilla who dropped points at home. Elsewhere, Espanyol are rooted to the foot of the table after losing at Granada. There are a lot of interesting matches this weekend with plenty of money to be made.

Friday 7 February

Alaves 29/20
Draw 2/1
Eibar 2/1
(22:00)
We kick-off proceedings with a low-key affair as Alaves host Eibar in an all-important six-pointer. Both teams are tied on 24 points and look to move away from the bottom three. Alaves are currently 15th and the visitors are one spot below.

Form is not favoring either side here with both teams winless in the last two La Liga outings. Alaves were 2-0 winners the last time these teams met and I’d expect them to do the double especially with their impressive home form against fellow struggles. Back Alaves to win at home.

Saturday 8 February

Levante 17/10
Draw 22/10
Leganes 33/20
(14:00)
Levante and Leganes square off at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia where the hosts will be looking to end their four-match losing streak. Paco Lopez’s men are aware that a defeat here will drag them back into the red zone, while a win will almost guarantee safety.

Leganes are doing well under the leadership of Javier Aguirre and they are now tied on 18 points with Mallorca, meaning any point is crucial at this stage. I don’t see any of the sides committing or attacking, but I’m expecting a very tactical game with a lot of caution from both teams as a draw favours the two sides.  Back these teams to cancel each other out.

Getafe 11/10
Draw 43/20
Valencia 26/10
(17:00)
Getafe who narrowly missed out on top four last season are now third after their convincing 2-0 win at the San Mames. In order to play Champions League football, you have to prove you’re ready by winning at tough grounds and beating top teams at home. The hosts have another opportunity to prove they are ready to compete in Europe against the big teams.

Valencia are fifth on the table and are slowly picking up momentum and making steady progress as they seek a top-four finish. Two points separate these two teams between third and fifth. A win for Getafe will put them in a massive position and with home advantage, the Azulones will be ready for this assignment. Back Getafe to win and Both Teams to score at 4/1.

Valladolid 21/10
Draw 21/10
Villarreal 14/10
(19:30)
Valladolid host high-flying Villarreal in a mid-table clash.  The hosts returned to winning ways with an away win against relegation struggles Mallorca last Sunday.

On the other hand, Villarreal continued with their impressive run making it nine wins from the last 10 when thrashing Osasuna 3-1 last weekend. The Yellow Submarine won 2-0 the last time these sides met. The away win at 14/10 should be the value bet of the weekend.

Atletico Madrid 7/20
Draw 33/10
Granada 19/2
(22:00)
Atletico Madrid have been in terrible form and they find themselves on sixth position on the log standings which is an unfamiliar territory for such a massive club with great history. The fans are calling for a managerial change while the analysts say it’s because of injuries that the club is struggling.

Whatever the case may be, something has to be done to change the current state and a win here would be the first step. Granada have done tremendously this season and are within reach for Europa League spot as they are six points behind their opponents. This is a perfect opportunity for Atletico Madrid to redeem themselves.

Sunday 9 February

Espanyol 7/10
Draw 26/10
Mallorca 15/4
(13:00)
Espanyol are rooted at the foot of the table after last week’s defeat at Granada. They host fellow relegation struggles Mallorca and a 3-0 win will see them leapfrog the visitors.

Mallorca are currently 17th on the standings and they need to avoid defeat against teams below them as they look to survive the axe. The RCDE stadium is now believing and it will be difficult for teams to walk away with something here. Get on the home win at 7/10.

Sociedad 23/20
Draw 43/20
Athletic Bilbao 51/20
(15:00)
Real Sociedad’s three-match winning streak came to an end after their 2-1 loss to Leganes last time out. The setback saw them drop further down to eighth on the standings allowing teams like Villarreal and Valencia gain advantage.

Athletic Bilbao lost their first game in 10 matches when succumbing to a 2-0 defeat at home to Getafe. However, the visitors have failed to win in each of their last six La Liga matches. Get on the hosts to return to winning ways.

Osasuna 5/1
Draw 33/10
Real Madrid 5/10
(17:00)
Log-leaders Real Madrid will look to continue with their impressive run and make it nine wins on the bounce in all competitions. Madrid have kept three consecutive clean sheets and the players will be confident of winning the title after the good run of form.

Osasuna are well clear of the relegation zone and that’s a massive achievement for a team that’s recently returned. The hosts are no pushovers, especially at home where they have lost only twice this season. It won’t be easy but back Real Madrid to grind out a result here.

Celta Vigo 49/20
Draw 23/10
Sevilla 23/20
(19:30)
Inconsistency is the perfect word to describe the two teams as you never know which team will show up on the day. The hosts are desperate for points as they look to avoid relegation while Sevilla are looking to cement top four which makes this game an interesting affair with plenty at stake. It was a share of the spoils the last time these sides met in Seville and I wouldn’t rule out another draw here. Because of inconsistencies, back Both Teams to score 6/10.

Real Betis 36/10
Draw 3/1
Barcelona 7/10
(22:00)
We end of the round with an interesting clash of Real Betis vs Barcelona, a match that has produced a lot of goals in recent times with the last four matches finishing 5-2, 1-4, 4-3 and 0-5 all in favour of the champions.

Both these sides play attacking football so it’s usually an open encounter and those tend to have goals. I’m expecting yet another open encounter here and maybe we can see a surprise in results. Back Barca on the Win/Draw and Over 2.5 Goals at 9/10.

Last week’s TREBLE won @ 6/1
Real Madrid Win 8/10
Barcelona Win & BTTS 12/10
Villarreal Win 17/20

This week’s Double @10/1
Real Sociedad Win 23/20
Getafe Win & BTTS 4/1
