2014 champions – Germany, were knocked out of the 2018 soccer world cup. Let’s look at the teams to have been dealt the same fate over the years.
Spain, after successfully lifting the 2010 soccer world cup in South Africa following an extra time goal from Iniesta, were tipped to make a big push for the title. The Spaniards scored eight goals, won six games and lost one on their way to triumph.
But in 2014, their world came crashing down after they lost their opening two matches of the group stages. The first, a demoralising 5 – 1 loss to the Netherlands. The next, a 2 – 0 defeat at the hands of Chile.
Here’s a list of teams that have been knocked out in the first round after winning the tournament:
- Italy – 1950
- Brazil – 1966
- France – 2002
- Italy – 2010
- Spain – 2014
- Germany – 2018
On the 27th of June 2018, Germany were knocked out in the group stages after a loss to South Korea in their final group stage match.
Germany opened their tournament with a loss to Mexico, they had to fight hard for a win against a dogged Swedish outfit, with the help from an injury-time free kick from Toni Kroos snatching the win.
But it was all over for the Germans when they lost in the final minutes of the match against South Korea, who scored twice. Although the Germans commanded and created most of the opportunities, their execution lacked precision, thus, their road had come to an astounding end, much to the dismay of their country.
