The Black Caps start the series in fourth place in the WTC and will be looking to keep themselves in contention for the final at Lord’s next year.
New Zealand welcome back skipper Kane Williamson after he was rested for the T20Is and he will be the key batsman for the hosts.
Another player rested during the T20Is was Trent Boult who returns to lead a settled attack that should include Neil Wagner and Tim Southee.
Regular wicketkeeper BJ Watling is in doubt for the first Test with uncapped Devon Conway called into the group as cover for the gloveman. Tom Blundell is expected to take Watling’s place in the XI should he not pass fit.
New Zealand can move above England in the WTC if they can win both of their matches against the West Indies.
West Indies
The West Indies have brought plenty of bowling firepower to the party in the form of experienced quicks Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel.
Those frontline quicks are backed up by skipper Jason Holder who returns after also being rested during the T20Is.
The West Indies are desperate to climb up the WTC standings after a poor start has left them third from bottom on the standings.
Seddon Park has been the venue for two Tests between the teams, and the West Indies have lost both of them comfortably.
The opening batsman will be vitally important for the West Indies who will need to dull the effects of the new ball to put significant runs on the board. Both Darren Bravo and Kraigg Brathwaite have been in good touch and should front the tourists’ efforts.
Verdict: New Zealand 7/20
The hosts should have the quality to take this match provided the weather plays along.
