The final field for the Daily News 2000 has been announced. This race for 3 year olds has always been an early indicator for who will be a big runner on Vodacom Durban July day. AL SAHEM from the Sean Tarry yard will look to add another Grade 1 on top of his SA Derby win early in the year, while the Geoff Woodruff trained PAGODA will look to better his 2nd place in that same race.

The lack of pace may again be an issue in the day’s second Grade 1 of the afternoon and once again ten furlongs is the trip.
The jockey bookings could hold the key to unravelling this mystery and top rider Richard Fourie seems to have opted for COPPER FORCE as opposed to stablemate ZODIAC RULER whom he partnered to 3rd position in the Guineas recently.
COPPER FORCE is an improving son of Royal Air Force with an impressive turn of foot and this ten furlongs could be ideal for him on his peak showing.
He’s enjoyed a smart preparation and is well drawn.
The same applies to ZODIAC RULER who stayed on for 2nd behind the excellent EDICT OF NANTES over this trip in the Derby at Kenilworth earlier this year.
The feeling is that the top selection can get much closer to EDICT OF NANTES than the stablemate did on Met Day as the Crawford inmate appears the horse to beat.
EDICT OF NANTES had an eye-catching comeback run on his local debut on the polytrack recently but again the concern is whether this race comes too soon for him.
He will be fitter though & just like Epona in the Woolavington 2000, this bay colt will prefer the pedestrian gallop.
The pick of the locals is SECRET CAPTAIN who is better on the turf & may enjoy blinkers.
