Akhona’s Top 5 Iconic Sports Moments

Number 1: The 2007 Super Rugby Final

“That was a special moment for me because it was the first time we had two South African teams in the final. The way we came back to win that game in the last two minutes was special because everyone thought the Sharks had it in the bag. We never stopped fighting and eventually we were rewarded and won the game.”

The Sharks and the Bulls’ met at ABSA Stadium in Durban and the Bulls won a cliff-hanger 20-19.

Number 2: 2007 World Cup Call-up

‘’Being part of a world cup squad alone is special for any player regardless if you win it or not. So when I received the news that I will be part of the traveling team, it was much to my delight because it’s every players dream.”

Ndungane was part of the Springbok class of 2007 that went on to beat England 15-6 in the final in Paris.

“’This was a very special year for me because straight after winning the Super Rugby we went on to win the World Cup which was the second time South Africa were crowned World Champions and I was lucky to be part of that squad. So that will go down as my favourite moment in my sporting career.”

Number 3: Siya Kolisi lifting the World Cup

“For me, it all started when Rassie [Erasmus] took over as the head coach. Rassie changed the mind-set of the team and everyone started believing in the Boks and they made it all the way to the final.”

The Springboks ran out convincing winners by a score of 32-12 and Siya Kolisi became the first black captain to lift the World Cup for South Africa.

Number 4: Bafana Bafana winning 1996 AFCON

‘’That again was a very special moment for South African sports, seeing the FNB packed to capacity and Nelson Mandela was there to give the boys some ‘Madiba magic’.”

South Africa won their first and only AFCON title in 1996, beating Tunisia 2–0.

Number 5: The 2019
Masters Golf Challenge

‘’Tiger Woods defied all the odds and won the 2019 Masters Challenge and silenced everyone who had written him off. That was a lesson to everyone that if you’re determined and want something – back yourself and you will achieve it, that’s what he did.’’

Tiger Woods collected his 15th major win and his fifth Masters, at the 2019 Masters Tournament. The 44-year-old hadn’t won a major championship since 2008, when he triumphed at the U.S. Open.
