The Tour Championship | Thursday 11 September – Sunday 14 September | East Lake

The FedEx Cup play-offs reach a climax this week as the fourth event in the series tees off at East Lake in Atlanta. The course has hosted the tournament since 2004 and has always been full of entertainment. Last year Henrik Stenson won here and that victory catapulted him into the golfing history books, lifting the FedEx Cup and claiming the massive pay cheque that accompanies it. This year the top five players in the FedEx rankings could all win the $10 million if they manage a victory here. For the rest of the field things aren’t as easy though as the possibility of them walking away with first place will be dependent on the rest. Moving along, the course measures in at just over 7,300 yards and is a tough test of every aspect of the game. From the tight fairways to the difficult greens made even more treacherous by tough pin positions, this is going to challenge every one of the thirty players competing. The winner is going to need to have nerves of steel and the confidence in his game to back himself. So who will reign victorious here? Let’s have a look and see.

To Win Outright
Rory McIlroy  7/2
Adam Scott  11/1
Sergio Garcia  11/1
Jim Furyk  12/1
Rickie Fowler  12/1

VALUE BETS
Rickie Fowler (12/1 a win, 24/10 a place)
Rickie Fowler has been in the most incredible form of late and yet despite that he hasn’t managed a win yet this season. He managed to finish inside the Top 5 in all four Majors and in the last four months he has managed six Top 10s, so you can forgive me for feeling that he is due a win. He will arrive here safe in the knowledge that he has the temperament to compete at the highest level and confident that if things go his way he could be in for a life changing victory. This confidence will be bolstered further by the fact that he’ll be aware that the tough course will suit his incredible game from tee to green. Wins on Fowler looks a good bet.

Jim Furyk (12/1 a win, 24/1 a place)
The problem with a field of only thirty players is that value is pretty difficult to come by and players like Jim Furyk, who have been there and thereabouts on occasion this season, are available at what seem like pretty short prices. However a look at Furyk’s form this year shows that backing him at 12/1 is justified. Three second-place finishes definitely tell a story of a man due a win and with his course form, that win could easily come this week. He won here in 2010 and has managed six Top 10s over the years so will be looking forward to giving himself a real chance this week. With places so short this week I’m only tipping wins so get on.

Sergio Garcia (11/1 a win, 22/10 a place)
I’ve been tipping Garcia consistently for what seems like ages now and with the end of the regular season now having arrived, it’s time to throw my hat in the ring one last time. Three runner-up finishes have ensured that my confidence in the Spaniard hasn’t left me broke but that elusive win just hasn’t been forthcoming. That could all change this week though and if he arrives here and hits the ball as well as he has over the past few weeks he will be challenging come Sunday. 11/1 is a steal, get on.

TOP BET: Justin Rose (14/1 a win, 28/10 a place)
Justin Rose has had a stellar season thus far and there aren’t many players who can boast the finishes that he’s managed over the course of a year. Having won his first Major when he won the US Open, he also managed another victory on the US PGA when he won the Quicken Loans National and the next week he won on the European Tour, that time being when he emerged victorious from the Scottish Open. He’s in a bit of a slump at the moment but will be confident he can get out of it in a tournament that he has done well in in the past. 14/1 is a bit short but I have a feeling this could be Rose’s time to shine.
