Race 5

This looks to be a tricky race to start off the day’s Jackpot with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. PYRMONT finished second in his penultimate run over six furlongs and was then a bit disappointing when ending up in fourth place last time out when dropping down to 1100M, finishing five lengths behind the winner, but he did jump awkwardly and then overraced in the early stages that day, so perhaps that effort can be forgiven. He gets draw six and should do better over what appears to be a more suitable distance at this stage of his career.

GOLDEN POINT has cracked pole position and made solid improvement when winning his maiden race by 2.3L in his last start over 1100M at the fourth time of asking. He was bumped at the start and then again entering the home straight, so that effort was made more encouraging. He takes on stronger here, but he may well be up to the task at hand.

RED BERYL has consistent formlines to his name and was carried wide approaching the home turn before making good late progress when ending up in second place last time out over seven furlongs, just a length back from the victor. From his handy draw four, he should turn in another honest performance here.

Race 6

There are six unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether the connection believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, THE BIG SEAL may prove to be the best. He has finished second in both his runs to date, the latest over 1100M, two and a half lengths adrift of the winner. He is sure to put his pole position to good use in his endeavour to go one better today.

Two 3yr old fillies could chase him home with the slight preference of going to CARRY ON CATHY who put her disappointing penultimate start firmly behind her when finishing the second last time out over five furlongs, one length behind the winner, this despite jumping awkwardly. She was returning from a 19-week break that day and is drawn wide in gate thirteen, but she should use her early speed to move across without expending too much energy.

SNOWDROP finished sixth last time out, 7.4L off the winner, but her jockey reported that she was totally unsuited to the pace of the race and she did also come four wide into the home stretch. Two runners out of that contest have however subsequently won, so that effort may not be too bad. She has her first run for her new trainer and has an even wider draw fifteen, but on the plus side, she will have 2kgs taken off her back thanks to her claiming apprentice. If fully settled into her new surroundings, she should give a good account of herself here.

Race 7

The day’s value bet, NICOLA is a 6yr old mare taking on the boys, but she is seldom far off the action and although recorded as finishing sixth last time out over 1100M, she was just 2.8L behind the winner. She finished well that day and the form of that race has stood up well with four runners out of that contest subsequently winning. She jumps from a cosy draw two and should be right up there when they hit the line.

POCKET PISTOL followed up his penultimate run victory over 1100M with a sixth-place finish next time out, 2.8L behind the winner when returning from a 17-week absence and the form of that race has been franked. He is drawn one outside the top pick and will have 2kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice to aid his cause.

PERSIAN QUEEN is a 4yr old filly who won her debut over this c&d by just over two lengths and was then stuck out wide in the early stages before ending up in sixth spot last time out over five furlongs, 2.7L back from the winner. She has pulled gate six and should enjoy the drop in distance. She does return from a 25-week rest and has not had the benefit of a barrier trial, so her fitness will have to be taken on trust, but she too will have 2kgs taken off her back for the services of her claiming apprentice.

Race 8

CAMP RIFLE’S last three runs have yielded a win and two second-place finishes, the latest a neck defeat over this trip, just a neck behind the winner, this after coming five wide into the home straight and hitting the front at the 200M pole. He attracted plenty of betting support that day and although drawn wide in gate twelve, he will be hoping to make amends here and is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card.

RICH AND SHAMELESS on the other hand has got pole position and raced up with the leaders before battling all the way down to the wire to finish fifth last time out over a mile, 2.2L back from the winner. He could emerge as the biggest danger to the top choice.

LA TIGRESA is a 5yr old mare taking on males, but she had finished second over a mile in her two races prior to finishing sixth in her latest outing when dropping down to six furlongs, five lengths behind the winner. She was returning from a lengthy 49-week absence that day and although she is stuck out wide in draw thirteen, she should still nevertheless be involved in the finish.
