Race 6: ONE AWAY(2)

Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 4: LAIKIPIA(2)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

Another extremely competitive maiden contest which features many form runners who should fight out a close affair. The Cape visitor LAIKIPIA showed smart improvement when she ran on again to achieve her career best effort in a strong field over this distance in the ‘Mother City’ two weeks ago. She was returning from a twelve-week break so will strip fitter now and should build on the performance. The obvious worry is how she has travelled and whether she handles this right-handed track.

Race 6: ONE AWAY(2)
Jockey: Sandile KHATHI  – Trainer: Grant PADDOCK

ONE AWAY is in great form, particularly over this c & d and he is weighted to challenge STREAK (0.5kg worse off) stronger today. Of course, the pair were separated by half a length in favour of the latter last month. The yard of the top rating is in red-hot form and that may sway things in favour of the son of Warm White Night. The latter held his form in his subsequent outing and should produce another creditable display.

TOP BET
Race 7: CHAMPERY(4)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

The Cape raiders hold a strong hand in the day’s topliner, a six-furlong listed event for fillies and mares. CHAMPERY is a classy four-year-old who has shown signs of regaining form recently and she ran on well for 4th behind subsequent winner Live Life over this trip at Kenilworth earlier this year. She hasn’t won for almost two years but this could be an ideal opportunity for the favourably drawn daughter of Querari.

Race 9: CASINO KING(3)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

CASINO KING has disappointed in his two post maiden runs over further but he was impressive when beating subsequent winner Golden Tongue in the maiden ranks over this c & d prior to that. The import- ed gelding was docked a handy six pounds after those performances but reverting to the mile could be ideal for him and he can certainly bounce back to best from gate 1. Top jockey Gavin Lerena takes the ride.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 8: KILLUA CASTLE(14)

Jockey: Liam TARENTAAL – Trainer: Duncan MCKENZIE

The pace should be solid in this highly competitive handicap where the value could lie with the veteran gelding KILLUA CASTLE, who astonishingly shoulders just 48kgs, thanks largely to the 4kgs apprentice allowance. The former Summer Cup runner-up has had a distinguished career which is nearing its end. However, he did improve with blinkers recently and is weighted to reverse the form of his penultimate run over this c & d, when finishing well for a close 3rd behind AFRIKABURN (5.5kgs worse off). His yard had a winner at this venue last Friday and the likely fast pace should play into his hands.
