Neil Morrice’s Thoughts on The Grand National 2019
TIGER ROLL, the horse who clawed his way to the narrowest of victories in the race last year, looks set to start one of the shortest-priced favourites in Grand National history in the Randox Health-sponsored race on Saturday.
Should Tiger Roll justify favouritism and win Saturday’s race he would be the first back-to-back winner since the legendary Red Rum. The latter, a household name across the globe, won in 1973 and 1974 before claiming it for a third time in 1977.
His achievement has stood the test of time – can Tiger Roll take over the mantle on Saturday?
One of thirteen horses trainer Gordon Elliott is set to saddle in the four and a half mile feature, Tiger Roll has since his 2018 triumph accumulated a massive public following largely courtesy of success in the Glenfarclas Cross-Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
During that stroll in the park the gelding toyed with his rivals and crossed the line full of running. All obstacles come alike to him and the money has piled on him for Aintree in the last three weeks so that he is a short as 7-2 in the Hollywoodbets Grand National market.
Elliott has smashed his mentor Martin Pipe’s record of runners in the National which was 10 in the 40-runner 2001 edition. This year Elliott eclipsed that by fielding a ‘baker’s dozen’ but he’s quick to dismiss Tiger Roll’s 7-2 odds as unrealistic, even though he reports the gelding to have enjoyed the perfect preparation.
Elliott might be taking stock of the fact that PLEASANT COMPANY, who was in front of Tiger Roll a stride past the post 12 months ago, is reopposing as a 20-1 shot. It certainly puts things into perspective.
The Cullentra maestro observed: “Would I back Tiger Roll at 7-2 ? Probably not. But I have only positive things to report about him. He’s in absolutely great form and his preparation has been brilliant, it couldn’t have gone any better.”
Emphasising that he will run anything that gets into the contest, Elliott also had positive vibes for American Grand National winner JURY DUTY who bids to continue a lasting legacy of horses from across the pond that stem back to the 1938 winner Battleship. No other horse has accomplished that double.
Elliott added: “Jury Duty is flying and I couldn’t be happier with him.”
Elliott has booked top amateur Jamie Codd for MALA BEACH. Having notched two winners at the Cheltenham Festival, Codd will try to better his second placing on Cause Of Causes two years ago.
Another springer in the market is the Willie Mullins-trained veteran RATHVINDEN for whom 12-1 has become scarce. He has won on three of the five occasions he’s competed over further than three miles and at eleven represents an age group that has done particularly well in the race in recent years.
Nicky Henderson, still seeking a first Grand National success, is bullish about VALTOR who schooled brilliantly over Aintree-style fences in Lambourn.
“He’s not a big horse but he was very good in the schooling. He’s good to go for the National,” said the Seven Barrows trainer.
