What is the Grand National?

The 2019 Grand National festival at Aintree starts on Thursday 4th April 2019, with the main event taking place on Saturday. But what is so special about this race? Learn more below.

The Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. First run in 1839, it is a handicap steeplechase over 4 miles 514 yards (6.907 km) with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps. The race normally has up to 40 runners participating, however as few as 12 runners completed the race in 2018.

It is the most valuable jump race in Europe, with a prize fund of £1 million (R18.7 Million). An event that is prominent in British culture, the race is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year.

The favourite for this year’s race is Tiger Roll (last year’s winner), who is looking to become the first horse since Red Rum (1974) to successfully defend his Grand National title.
