International Racing: Hamilton – Tuesday 26 May 2020

A competitive eight-race programme is scheduled for Hamilton on Tuesday. The best bet on the card is MAGICIAN in Race 1. He was touched off in his last start over twelve furlongs. He does not meet the strongest line-up today and if confirming his recent improvement, he should go one better here.

Race 1
MAGICIAN is the best bet on this afternoon’s programme. He showed very good improvement when finishing second over twelve furlongs at Geelong last time. He moved up well at the 300m mark, fought hard all the way to the wire but just missed. The manner in which he finished off the race that day suggests that he will enjoy the drop back in distance. There isn’t much pace in this race and Craig Newitt may race him from a prominent position. The son of Americain should take a power of beating in this type of field. FALTONIUS has fair recent form to his credit. He settled well back in the field last time and chased solidly all the way to the line over a mile. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He should enjoy the step up in trip this afternoon and may be one of the leading contenders for the placings here.

Race 2
SOLEIL DE LUNE made the expected natural improvement when finishing second over this distance at Donald last time. He settled two lengths off the pace that day and stayed on well at the finish. He does have a wide barrier position to overcome today, but he does have the early gate speed to get across without using up too much energy. He may be hard to peg back in the closing stages. CICILO showed very good improvement when finishing second over seven furlongs at Casterton last time. The manner in which he finished off his race that day suggests that he will enjoy the step up in distance this afternoon. With a bit of luck in running from his wide barrier position, he may be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top selection.

Race 3
MEMORY LANE is a filly taking on the males. She produced a very good comeback run when finishing third over 1100m at Casterton last time. She had to do it the hard way that day as she raced three wide around the turn, but the manner in which she stayed on at the finish was encouraging. She is having her second run after a rest this afternoon and should strip a much fitter horse. Billy Egan retains the ride and the combination should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. SKI ZOOM produced some decent form before given a 19-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up. She finished second in her only start over this distance and if not in need of the run, she should pose a threat to the top choice.

Race 4
The raced horses in this contest don’t have the best form and it could be left up to the first timers to battle this race out. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to their chances. CAPITAL ZOUS is a son of Zoustar from the Lindsey Smith stable. He has not had any barrier trials coming into this race, but he does not need to be a stable superstar to win in this type of field. It is encouraging that Michael Rodd does duty this afternoon. SHINY PENNY is a daughter of Toronado from the Quinton Scott yard with 1.5kg claiming apprentice Will Price in the saddle. If not in need of this outing and with a bit of luck from her wide barrier position, she should be right there in the run down to the wire.

Race 5
ROME won his maiden race over 1100m on this course when returning from a 16-week break. The manner in which he ran on in the closing stages was eye-catching. He does take on stronger opposition this afternoon, but the son of Pierro is lightly raced and looks progressive. It is encouraging that Billy Egan keeps faith in the ride and from pole position, should notch up a quick double. ACTION IN CAIRNS followed up his maiden win with a good second-place finish over 1100m at Casterton last time. Dean Yendall retains the ride aboard the son of Kuroshio and if continuing his good run of form, he should be right there in the run down to the wire.

Race 6
FIRST RESPONDER has finished runner-up in his last two starts. He is having a good season thus far with a record of one win, three seconds and two third-place finishes from eight starts. Jockey Jordan Childs who rode him last time will have a better idea of how he likes to race and the pair can go one better here. TASK AND PURPOSE produced a very good comeback run when finishing fourth over a similar distance at Donald last time. She has won twice, finished second once and third once from eight attempts over this trip. She gets the services of a 2kg claiming apprentice this afternoon which should help her cause. She jumps from a good barrier position and must be included in all bets.

Race 7
HIGHLY SKILLED is the value bet on today’s card. She was in need of her last start when returning from a 28-week break over seven furlongs on this course. She will enjoy the step up to the mile as she has finished second twice and third once from four attempts over this trip. The daughter of Skilled should strip much fitter today and may be the one they all have to beat. RED JEWEL GIRL produced a very good comeback run when finishing third over seven furlongs at Wangaratta last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. She should strip much fitter this afternoon and with a 2kg claiming apprentice aboard, she may be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top choice.

Race 8
This is a weak Handicap to close off the meeting and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is STEAM ROLLER who has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. It must be noted that the form of his last race has been franked. 2kg claiming apprentice Laura Lafferty does duty this afternoon and she may get the best out of the son of Americain in the run down to the wire. ZANCADA’S last two starts after returning from a 35-week break have been decent. He has won once and finished third twice from five attempts over this distance. He is having his peak run this afternoon and will be doing his best work up the straight. 2kg claiming apprentice Jaden Lloyd who rode him last time retains the ride.
