Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips for Wednesday’s racing taking place at Kempton Park, Nottingham, Newcastle, and Ludlow!
KEMPTON PARK
Race 2: No2 – EMBARKED (Nap)
Trainer: James Fanshawe – Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
EMBARKED fetched a pretty penny at the yearling sales and made an immediate impact when touched off by the minimum margin on his debut at Leicester. The attractive son of Kodiac switches to Polytrack with a soft ground pedigree that should serve him well in future races on turf this autumn, but in the meantime, he should take out this first division of the novice. He’s worked well on the surface at home and has a favourable draw.
Race 4: No10 – CROWN POWER
Trainer: James Fanshawe – Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
From the same stable CROWN POWER catches the eye in this mile and a quarter fillies’ maiden. The beautifully-bred daughter of Camelot goes into battle with similar credentials, having finished second on her debut when looking as if the run would do her the power of good. That happened over course and distance and will have taught her plenty.
Race 6: No4 – JASH
Trainer: Simon Crisford – Jockey: Jim Crowley
JASH hasn’t quite turned into the force he threatened to be in his juvenile season but on latest start when in the money in a Newbury Listed race, signalled that the decision to keep him in training as a five-year-old can be justified. His two and a half lengths defeat by a Glorious Journey reads well in the context of today’s assignment.
NOTTINGHAM
Race 1: No2 – ARCADIAN NIGHTS (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: David Probert
Greenness shown in his nonetheless pleasing first foray onto the track at Haydock might now be eradicated sufficiently for ARCADIAN NIGHTS to step up to the plate. His mid-division finish in that maiden in the soft begs to be improved on in similarly testing conditions.
Race 4: No3 – TWILIGHTING (Nap)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: David Probert
TWILIGHTING makes plenty of sense on this first outing on turf for more than a year. She’s shown the ability to deliver when fresh, as was the case for her last time out success on the Lingfield Polytrack. The Kyllachy filly competes off a higher mark but from what should turn out to be a good draw is poised for another bold showing.
Race 7: No6 – SECOND SLIP
Trainer: James Fanshawe – Jockey: George Wood
Having run into a decent foe in Crystal Pegasus on debut at Bath, SECOND SLIP needed to dig deep to open his account after a real set-to with Jacinta De Vega at Salisbury. The Lope De Vega gelding is going to be better still on just a third career start on handicap debut and is bred to be effective in the easy conditions.
NEWCASTLE
Race 3: No5 – SIR EDWARD ELGAR (Nap)
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Kieren O’Neill
SIR EDWARD ELGAR was easy to back on debut at Kempton but made a good fist of it to finish third in a blanket finish behind Thunder Sun. The son of No Nay Never hadn’t shown much prior to that effort, which should have brought him nicely to the boil.
Race 5: No6 – WAITINGONANALIBI
Trainer: Richard Fahey – Jockey: Tony Hamilton
WAITINGONANALIBI rightly got the race in the Stewards’ room after meeting interference over course and distance last month. The improvement shown on that handicap debut indicates she’s still going to prove hard to beat off her new mark, whilst her trainer excels with this type of individual.
LUDLOW
Race 4: No3 – DOES HE KNOW (Nap)
Trainer: Kim Bailey – Jockey: David Bass
The course form of DOES HE KNOW when beaten by House Island last November has worked out, and makes the five-year-old of considerable interest in this novices’ hurdle. The Nap is reported to have schooled well in readiness for his first outing in almost 11 months.
Race 5: No6 – MORNING VICAR
Trainer: Nicky Henderson – Jockey: Nico de Boinville
This very competitive novices’ handicap chase can go to MORNING VICAR, who following just two appearances last season is looking to make up for lost time. Winner of a Newbury bumper and maiden hurdle at this course last winter, he was travelling powerfully when falling heavily in a similar race to this when last seen at Newbury in December. He can only improve for that first outing over fences and is fit enough to do himself justice.
