Sun Racing Stayers’ Hurdle 2019 Preview
FEW horses have caught the imagination of the jumping cognoscenti this season than PAISLEY PARK who is the jewel in trainer Emma Lavelle’s stable and poised to confirm his status as the top dog of his division by completing a fifth straight win under Aidan Coleman.
The seven-year-old has nothing to fear on the book from three horses that were many lengths behind him in the Cleeve Hurdle here in January but reoppose in the £325,000 feature, Race 4 on the Day 3 card.
Paisley Park has been as short as 5-4 for today’s Festival mission and that very factor means there are value alternatives in the race.
WEST APPROACH has 12 lengths to find on the Cleeve form, while BLACK OP and SAM SPINNER were even further back in third and fourth.
If there is to be an unexpected turnaround I think it can emanate from BLACK OP who was that day returning to hurdling after a couple of disappointing efforts over fences.
He was cruising at the top of the hill but weakened turning into the home straight. Trainer Tom George doesn’t think his eight-year-old was 100% fit and therein lies the key. If he needed the run and has been made fitter, he can definitely have a say in this under Noel Fehily.
SUPASUNDAE is another tackling a longer trip after Jessie Harrington elected to sidestep Tuesday’s Champion Hurdle with the nine-year-old.
While not having the speed to handle Apple’s Jade in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown everything about the racing style of Supasundae indicates he will be in his comfort zone going further and the cut in the ground also shouldn’t inconvenience him.
TOP NOTCH is similar to Black Op in that he reverts to hurdling after a stylish dismissal of Black Corton over fences at Kempton. That was over two and a half miles and three miles over timber round here is a whole new ball game, but Nicky Henderson wouldn’t have leap frogged the Ryanair with this tough-as-teak individual unless he felt he could be competetive.
