SCOTTSVILLE GRADE 1 SPRINTS
TSOGO SUN SPRINT DAY
FINAL FIELDS
Top Cape trainer Brett Crawford goes into Saturday’s R1-million, Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Sprint at Scottsville with four strings to his bow including the recent versatile winner of the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes over 1 400m, Undercover Agent.
The four-year-old Captain Al colt might well be the one to beat over the testing 1 200m track at Scottsville where speed is not the only important factor but a degree of stamina to back it up when the hard yards over the final 200m come into play that have put paid to the chances of many top sprinters over the years.
Saturday’s annual festival of speed at the Pietermaritzburg course has attracted the cream of South Africa’s speed horses with all four of the famous Grade 1 races that form the day’s Jackpot bet drawing full fields of 16 and setting the scene for tough, close and exciting finishes and the potential for upsets that could result in large exotic bet payouts.
In addition to the main feature event, the card includes the R750 000, Grade 1 South African Fillies Sprint, the R750 000, Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion and the R750 000, Allan Robertson Championship, the last two being for the country’s top two-year-olds.
Sean Tarry has three runners in the Tsogo Sun Sprint including the three-year-old Trippi colt Chimichuri Run that finished third in the Computaform Sprint and the seven-year-old Trip To Heaven, the very fast Trippi gelding that could win just about any sprint if he breaks on terms and produces his best effort.
The South African Fillies Sprint could produce the most exciting finish with the four-year-old Captain Al filly Snowdance back over the sprint distance. The Justin Snaith stable superstar won over 1 100m on debut then moved up to 1 400m and 1 600m where she won four times. Saturday’s 1 200m trip, just as it could help Undercover Agent, could see her staying on strongly and back in the winner’s enclosure.
Up against her, however, are Geoff Woodruff’s Camelot winner Schippers and the first two home in the Poinsettia Stakes Freedom Charter and Elusive Heart as well as the winner of the Umzimkulu over 1 400m, Temple Grafin, that ran third in the KRA Fillies Guineas at Greyville last time out.
Godolphin Barb Stakes winner African Warrior will clash with SA Nursery winner Frosted Gold in the Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion while Basadi Faith and Cavivar, first and second in the SA Fillies Nursery at Turffontein, will go head-to-head again being drawn alongside one another as they had been in their Highveld clash.
Out to beat them both will be the horses that filled the first four places in the Strelitzia Stakes, Singforafa, Me Time, Vandah’s Spirit and Naoshima, and the battle could be fast and tough to produce a thrilling finish.

Winning Form Preview:
Another open affair. CHIMICHURI RUN is the tentative selection in this Grade 1 sprint event. He faces a standside draw today which may not be an advantage, but he was running on powerfully in the Computaform Sprint and if he is able to repeat that effort he could take some beating. Sean Tarry holds a strong hand in the race and this 3yr colt may not be the stable elect, but the extra 200M of this race could suit him. BOLD RESPECT won this race last year and he too has drawn on the standside the course. Marcus takes the ride this afternoon so he will get all the assistance from the saddle. One of the other Tarry runners in the form of TRIP TO HEAVEN is taken to fill third spot. This 7yr old has notched up nine wins from 37 runs and but for his antics at the start he should have added to that number. SEARCH PARTY is the stable companion to the second selection and he too was staying on in the Computaform Sprint. A repeat of that run should see him close up at the finish.

Winning Form Preview:
An open looking SA Fillies Sprint faces punters here. SCHIPPERS has aquitted herself well in all of her starts to date. Her last start win was impressive as she raced handy and when asked for an effort she put the race to bed in a number of strides. A repeat of that effort will see her collecting the winning stake. SNOWDANCE is a class act and must be considered a big threat to the top selection. There may be a question as to todays distance, but this is a tough six furlong race with the finish line only being reached after a up-hill climb over the closing stages. As such, SNOWDANCER shoud be picking off the field in the closing stages. FREEDOM CHARTER is drawn on the standside of the track, which may not be to her advantage, but she won her comeback run in fine style and may be able to give a good account of herself in this company. ANIME hails from the stable that has had considerable success on this sprint day, so it would be foolish to discount her chances.
Magic Tips Prediction:

1st – Schippers (3)
2nd – Snowdance (1)
3rd – Freedom Charter (6)
4th – Anime (8)
