Race 5

There are four unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connections believe that they can win first-time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, RIP OFF may well prove to be the best. She is a 4-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she was bumped at the start before making good late progress to finish fourth last time out over 1500M, just under two and a half lengths behind the winner. She returns from an 18-week break, but has had two barrier trials, finishing second in the latest and from a handy draw three and having non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd in the irons, she looks to be the one to side with here.

ÉCLAIR VITALITY has only had two runs to date, finishing fifth on debut over 1100M and then showing the expected improvement to end up in second place next time out over 1200M, 0.8L behind the winner. He tried to go from jump to wire that day and would have come on further with that run under his belt and from gate six, he is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today.

PRINCE OF SORTS makes his debut after winning both of his barrier trials and could be almost anything. The gelding is drawn the widest of them all in gate eighteen, but he may well be up to the task at hand to win at the first time of asking.

Race 6

A 4-year-old filly and a 9-year-old mare could fight out the finish to this race and complete the exacta, but SUKIDA is taken to lead the field home. She was hampered at the start and raced three wide throughout before finishing strongly to win first time out over 900M by 1.3L going away from the opposition. She takes on stronger here, but she would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, she could be the one that they all have to beat, jumping from gate six.

LEAVE ME SOME has cracked pole position and has consistent formlines to her name, finishing second in three of her last four outings, the latest over 1000M, beaten just a short-head, this despite overracing towards the rear of the field and being checked at the 200M mark. She delivered a powerful finish over the closing stages, only to fall short in the shadow of the post.

OCEANS ONE overraced in the early and middle stages when finishing sixth last time out over 1100M, six and a half lengths adrift of the victor. The gelding gets a useful draw two and will have 2kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.

Race 7

The day’s value bet, SPICY HOTPOT is a 5-year-old mare taking on males, but she is seldom far off the action, finishing third last time out over 1400M, just under a length back from the winner, but she jumped awkwardly in that event and came three wide into the home straight, before chasing hard all the way down to the line. She jumps from gate six and will have Zac Lloyd in the saddle and she should turn in another honest performance today.

GLOBAL EMPIRE went from gun to tape to win his last start over 1200M by a head. The gelding faces a wide draw ten, but he is likely to adopt the same frontrunning tactics again today and prove difficult to reel in over the closing stages.

DENMAN STAR was having his first run for his new trainer and returning from a 24-week break when winning his last start over 1200M by a length. The gelding came four wide into the home stretch on that occasion before hitting the front at the 150M mark and then holding off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. Whilst drawn wideish in gate eight, be should nevertheless be included in all bets.

Race 8

LAIZABOUT showed plenty of toe and kicked clear of the field at the top of the home straight to win first time out over 1000M by putting six and a half lengths between himself at the opposition. The gelding will have to negotiate a wide draw fifteen, but he should use his early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy and may be too good for this field and as such, he is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card.

INCARCERATED had his consistency rewarded with his maiden victory last time out over 1200M, by two lengths. The gelding jumped awkwardly that day, bumping another runner, but recovered quickly to pick up the lead, before hanging on courageously to record the victory. He takes on stronger here, but gets a kinder draw four and will have ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle and could emerge as the biggest danger to the top pick.

ICONIC TREASURE followed up her penultimate run victory over 1200M with a third-place finish next time out over the same sprint trip, 2.7L back from the winner. He returns from a 23-week spell, but has had two barrier trials, finishing third in the latest and although drawn wideish in gate eight, he should be involved in the finish.
