Race 5.

There are four unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connection believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, the day’s value bet, WHY DOUBT may prove to be the best. She is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she is seldom far off the action, finishing fourth last time out over this c&d, one and a half lengths behind the winner when returning from a 10 week rest. She stayed on well that day and from her gate five, she looks to be the one to side with here.

SECRET HUNTER has finished third in his last two starts over this sprint distance, the latest on this track, 1.3L back from the winner, but he overraced in the middle stages that day. If settling from a wideish draw eight, he should be right up there when they hit the line.

GLINT OF SILVER is drawn one outside the latter and is a 2yr old colt taking on older horses, but he was making good late progress when ending up in fourth place last time out over five furlongs, 4.2L off the winner. He was returning from a longer 23 week break that day and should be doing his best work late.

Race 6.

POKERJACK has cracked pole position and had his consistency rewarded with his maiden victory last time out over 1100M by half a length. He struck the front at the 200M mark that day and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The gelding will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and could prove good enough to chalk up a quick double.

Two 3yr old fillies could chase him home, with the slight preference going to DOLLAR MAGIC who followed up her penultimate run victory over 1100M with a fourth place finish next time out over five furlongs, just over two lengths adrift of the winner, when returning from a 22 week absence. She showed plenty of toe that day and whilst drawn wide in gate twelve, she should use her early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy.

WONDERWOMEN’S last three runs have yielded a third, second and then a 0.8L win last time out over this c&d. She had to be held up entering the home straight that day, so that effort was encouraging. She gets a handy draw three and will have her peak run after returning from a 16 week spell. Ex-SA jockey/trainer David Payne is sure to have her in good condition to be competitive in this line-up.

Race 7.

With the late scratching of one of his main rivals, the door may have opened for today’s best bet, DESTINY’S BOUNTY to chalk up his second career victory. He put two and a half lengths between himself and the opposition when going from jump to wire to win his maiden race last time out over six furlongs at the fourth time of asking. He was returning from a 20 week break that day, which clearly was just what he needed. The gelding is drawn wide in gate ten, but on the plus side, he will get 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice to aid his cause.

THE HIMALAYAS has only had the three runs to date and race wide throughout, before coming four wide into the home straight when winning his last outing over 1300M by one and a half lengths. He was returning from a longer 25 week spell and the form of that race has stood up well with three runners out of that contest subsequently winning. Jumping from a useful draw two, he could emerge as the biggest danger to the top choice.

XPRESSO was hampered shortly after the start and raced wide without cover, but nonetheless finished fourth last time out over 1100, just under two and a half lengths behind the winner. He stayed on well that day, suggesting that the extra ground on offer here will be to his liking. From gate six, he should be involved in the finish.

Race 8.

ROSEIRRO has consistent formlines to his credit and came from some way back to win his last start over 1500M by a head. He was friendless in the betting markets that day, but from a cozy draw four and with having 1.5kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice, if he is able to confirm that last effort, he could be the one that they all have to beat.

SONGBIRD SERENADE is a 5yr old mare taking on males and although recorded as finishing seventh last time out over a mile, she was just 3.2L behind the winner, notwithstanding jumping awkwardly. She recovered quickly to race just behind the leader and then stayed on well over the closing stages, so should have no issue with the step up in trip. She has pulled gate seven and will be having her peak run after returning from a 13 week rest.

ADIOS STEVE has posted two solid last efforts, the latest when fourth over 1300M, 1.8L behind the winner. He had to be held up in the home straight that day, only seeing daylight at the 150M mark, before delivering a powerful finish. He has his peak run after returning from a longer 24 week break and is drawn the widest of them all in gate thirteen, but given his style of racing, he is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the closing stages of the race.
