Race 4

There are two unraced runners in the field, so keep an eye on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether either of the connection believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for either, or both, should be respected. Of the raced runners, AMERICAN STARLET may prove to be the best. She is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she was bumped at the start before staying on well to finish second on debut over six furlongs, two and a half lengths behind the winner. She would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, she could be the one that they all have to beat, jumping from gate five and having ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham in the irons, so she will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

NAMOI RIVER has only had three runs to date and showed marked improvement to finish second last time out over six furlongs, 1.8L back from the victor. He was slow away that day and raced wide in the early stages, but made good late progress over the closing stages. The gelding gets a handy draw two and should be right up there when they hit the line.

MIDNIGHT AFFAIR is another 3-year-old filly in the race. She lost a length at the start, but finished well to end up in fifth place last time out over six furlongs, just under three and a half lengths off the winner. The filly is drawn wideish in gate eight but should be included in all bets.

Race 5

As with the previous race, there are several unraced runners in this contest, so the same comment in respect of keeping an eye on the betting moves applies here as well. CATOGGIO finished fourth in his first two outings and was returning from a 20-week rest in his latest outing over 1100M, four lengths adrift of the winner, but he did hang out all the way down the home stretch. The colt has pulled a wide gate nine, but he should turn in another honest performance here.

MEDIA WORLD has also had just two starts and was returning from a shorter 15-week break when second over six furlongs, three and a half lengths back from the winner. He raced just off the pace and had to be steadied off the heels of another runner at the 400M pole, so he had his excuse. The colt gets a kinder gate four and can complete the exacta.

BROADCAST BOOGIE is a filly taking on males, but she has cracked pole position and finished third on debut over five furlongs, just a half-length back from the winner and the form of that race has been franked. She would have come on further with that run under her belt and should not be easily discarded.

Race 6

The day’s value bet, ZAHDI is a 4-year-old filly taking on boys, but she won over 1100M three runs back, and finished second in her last two runs, the latest over today’s sprint trip, 1.3L behind the winner. She came three wide into the home straight in that event, before striking the front at the 100M mark, only to be run out of it very late. She has pulled a useful draw three and will be having her peak run after returning from a 17-week break.

HERB had solid form prior to being a tad disappointing when finishing ninth last time out over six furlongs, just under six lengths off the victor, but he raced four wide without cover on that occasion. The gelding returns from a 15-week rest without having had the benefit of a barrier trial, so his fitness will have to be taken on trust and faces a wide gate nine, but on the plus side, he will get 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.

PROUD IMAGE has consistent formlines to his name and did not get the clearest of passages in the home straight and had to be eased at the 100M mark when finishing third last time out over six furlongs, 1.2L behind the winner. From gate seven and with better luck in running, he should be involved in the finish.

Race 7

BUSH TELEGRAPH is a 3-year-old filly bumping males, but she won on debut over 1300M and then finished third over the same c&d next time out, just a neck behind the winner, but she only saw daylight at the 250M pole that day, before delivering a powerful finish over the latter stages. She was also crowded close to home, so that effort was encouraging. The filly will have to negotiate draw eight, but she could give the training partnership of Jason Attard and Lucy Keegan Attard a quick double, should the top pick win the previous race and she is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card.

FLYING BANDIT finished seventh first time out over 1100M and then showed the expected improvement when winning his next start by a half length, when stepping up to 1300M. He finished well on that occasion, suggesting that the extra ground on offer here will be to his liking. The gelding is drawn one outside the top pick and could well emerge as her biggest danger.

MONTE MAXIMUS is seldom far off the action, finishing fourth last time out over seven furlongs, two and a half lengths back from the winner, but he did jump awkwardly that day and overraced in the middle stages. The gelding has his peak run for his new trainer and returning from an 18 week spell and is sure to put his pole position to good use.
