Race 4

MONARCHS BRAE tried to go from jump to wire when finishing second last time out over 1900M, just a head behind the winner. He gets a handy draw two and is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today.

TAJAWAL put his disappointing penultimate start over 1500M in heavy going behind him when finishing fourth next time out over 1900M, just under two and a half lengths back from the winner, this despite being bumped at the start. The gelding stayed on well that day, suggesting that the extra ground on offer here would be to his liking. Jumping from gate six, he should be right up there when they hit the line.

ELSIE MAY is a 4-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she followed up her penultimate run victory over 1550M with a fourth-place finish next time out over 1600M, just over three and a half lengths back from the winner. It should however be noted that she was bumped at the start, finding herself towards the rear of the field, before delivering a powerful finish over the closing stages. The filly is drawn one inside the latter and should be doing her best work late.

Race 5

The day’s value bet, HI DUBAI is a 4-year-old filly taking on males, but she had solid form prior to being a tad disappointing when finishing eighth last time out over 1100M, just over five lengths off the winner, when having her first run for her new trainer and returning from a lengthy 48-week spell. She raced three wide without cover in that event and then came five wide into the home straight, before having to be checked at the 350M mark, so she had her excuses. The filly has a useful draw two and could give in-form jockey Nash Rawiller a quick double in the day’s Jackpot.

WORLD ALLIANCE had his consistency rewarded with a 0.8L victory last time out over 1200M, notwithstanding being held up between the 450M and 350M mark and then having to be steadied off the heels of another runner at the 350M pole. From his cosy draw three, he should turn in another honest performance today.

ELEGANT EMPRESS is another 4-year-old filly in the race. She used frontrunning tactics, but faded over the final 200M when ending up in tenth spot last time out over 1000M, 7.3L adrift of the victor, but she was reported to have returned with a minor leg injury, so a line should be drawn through that effort. She returns from an 18-week rest, but had had two barrier trials, finishing second in the latest. From gate seven, she should be included in all bets.

Race 6

MOSTRO won his maiden race last time out over 1350m by one and a half lengths, at the fourth time of asking, despite jumping awkwardly and bumping another runner. He recovered quickly to take the lead and then fought off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The gelding has his peak run after returning from a 37-week break and whilst drawn wide in gate ten, he should use his early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy.

MICKEY’S MEDAL won over 1500M three runs back, finished second in his next two outings, the latest over 1600M, one and a half lengths behind the winner. He did come four wide into the home straight in that event, but still managed to battle all the way down to the wire. The gelding has pulled gate five and will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.

HEADLEY GRANGE has finished fourth in his last two starts, the latest over seven furlongs, just over two and a half lengths adrift of the victor. He jumped awkwardly, bumping another runner that day but was still able to hit the line hard. The gelding is drawn the widest of them all in gate twenty, but he is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the latter part of the race.

Race 7

KERGUELEN has only had two runs to date, winning on debut over 1200M by putting nine and a half lengths between himself and the opposition and finishing second next time out over 1300M, beaten a short-head. He finished strongly that day and with in-form non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd in the irons, he could prove hard to topple and is made the best bet on the day’s card.

HANAU is the stable companion of the top choice and was returning from a 17-week rest when finishing fifth last time out over 1100M, 2.3L back from the winner, but he was crowded at the 700M mark and then again at the 300M pole before being held up until the 200m mark, so he had his excuses. The form of that race has however stood up well, with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning and he has finished sixth in a barrier trial since then. Although drawn wide in gate nine, he could be the biggest threat to the top pick and makes a solid backup for the yard.

SWEYSIVE has consistent formlines to his name, finishing third last time out over 1550M, two lengths back from the victor. The gelding returns from a 19-week absence, but has had two barrier trials, winning them both to showcase his well-being. He has pulled a cosy draw four and should be involved in the finish.
