TOP BET
Race 1: CHAMPENOIS(2)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

CHAMPENOIS had an exciting debut over seven furlongs on the polytrack recently. She was slow into stride but produced a powerful finish and only went down a head to the well-supported Luna Child. The daughter of Visionaire would have come on appreciably from the experience and today’s extra furlong should suit the half-sister to former champion Pierre Jourdan.

Race 3: HOT CHILLI(5)
Jockey: Bernard FAYD’HERBE – Trainer: Garth PULLER

HOT CHILLI is effective on both surfaces at this venue and he had a decent last run given the circumstances. The chestnut will prefer today’s extra furlong and can take full advantage of a recent two-pound drop in his merit rating. His yard is in good form and he gets the services of a top jockey.

Race 5: WANDIE’S(1)
Jockey: S’manga KUMALO – Trainer: Sean TARRY

The Sean Tarry inmate WANDIE’S has only moderate recent form but she was campaigning in stronger company for quite some time and continues to steadily drop in the merit ratings. She showed some signs of life in her two comeback runs on this familiar surface and the bay mare can get back to form in this weak field. She will be cherry-ripe and runs well for Khumalo.

Race 6: BANNER HILL(1)

Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Glen KOTZEN

BANNER HILL was slightly disappointing in his second start in the province but that was in a strong Grade 2 field where he probably found the trip too sharp for him. Nevertheless, he wasn’t beaten far and should be cherry-ripe to produce a cracking effort over this preferred distance.

Race 8 (Daily News 2000): COPPER FORCE (7)
Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

The lack of pace may again be an issue in the day’s second Grade 1 of the afternoon and once again ten furlongs is the trip. The jockey bookings could hold the key to unravelling this mystery and top rider Richard Fourie seems to have opted for COPPER FORCE as opposed to stablemate ZODIAC RULER whom he partnered to 3rd position in the Guineas recently. COPPER FORCE is an improving son of Royal Air Force with an impressive turn of foot and this ten furlongs could be ideal for him on his peak showing. He’s enjoyed a smart preparation and is well drawn.

Race 7 (Woolavington 2000): EPONA(7)

Jockey: Anton MARCUS – Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

An intriguing renewal of this Grade 1 contest and in the absence of a natural pacesetter things should get really interesting but the Cape visitors are still expected to dominate. The well-related bay filly EPONA has probably had a rushed prep but she has tons of ability and the likely sedate gallop should suit her perfectly. She made a belated local debut after being withdrawn when carded to race on 23/04 as she didn’t eat up but there were no signs of fatigue as she impressively beat a quality field under a big mass over this trip on the polytrack two weeks ago. That run would have brought the daughter of Silvano on immensely and she will be fitter today.
