Race 3: RIVER THAMES(3)

Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

RIVER THAMES has improved smartly since the layoff and he finished strongly for a close 2nd to stablemate Knights Templar (runs in Grade 3 today) over this c & d last time out. The 3rd placed entrant Elusive Victor has won since to boost that formline and the best-drawn entrant has obvious scope for improvement.

Race 4: TWIST OF FATE(1)

Jockey: Bernard FAYD’HERBE – Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

The best-weighted entrant TWIST OF FATE has developed into a high calibre’ sort this campaign and he was only outrun late in the Guineas three weeks ago. Of course, he had the top class One World behind him that day and his pedigree and racing style indicates that he should relish this extra furlong. The Ramsden inmate drops significantly in class and should take all the beating. That said, there are some improving sorts who could certainly prove to be better than rated, particularly over this nine furlongs.

TOP BET

Race 5: DOUBLEMINT(5)
Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

The powerful Snaith yard has another strong hand in this Grade 2 contest over nine furlongs with a slight preference for the stable elect DOUBLEMINT. Last season’s Winter Derby winner had a fair but belated seasonal debut over shorter a month ago and he will strip much fitter today. The 3rd placed runner Earth Hour lifted that formline with a game subsequent triumph and this chestnut son of Twice Over proved his quality with a string of impressive performances behind the brilliant Rainbow Bridge last campaign.

Race 6: OH SUSANNA(5)
Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

The brilliant OH SUSANNA finally had her colours lowered by arch-rival LADY IN BLACK in a pinnacle event over a mile in mid-November but the daughter of Street Cry may have needed her seasonal debut. That said, the latter was also having her first start since the pair were separated by three parts of a length in favour of the former in a Grade 1 over ten furlongs during the KZN winter. The duo should strip much fitter and could again have the race to themselves despite the obvious rise in grade but the defending champion gets the nod over the extra furlong.

L'Ormarins Queens Plate 2019 - Horse Racing - Festival

L’Ormains Queen’s Plate
Race 7: RAINBOW BRIDGE(5)
Jockey: Bernard FAYD’HERBE – Trainer: Eric SANDS

An incredible renewal of the country’s premier mile contest where half of the ten entrants boast 14 Grade 1 successes between them and of course former Horse Of The Year LEGAL EAGLE attempts to register a fourth consecutive triumph in this famous event. The brilliant veteran gelding narrowly emerged victorious in one of South Africa’s most exciting finishes in recent history but undoubtedly faces the toughest test of his entire career today.

RAINBOW BRIDGE is a ‘freak’ and though he lost his unbeaten record in that sensational last Grade 2 contest over this c & d, his recovery after overracing in the early stages was unbelievable and could cancel out the 2kgs weight reversal with LEGAL EAGLE today. The early signs are that there will be a stronger tempo and the bay son of Ideal World could be on his way to be the country’s next great.

DO IT AGAIN produced arguably the race of his life when he almost downed ‘the champ’ on his seasonal debut following a 22 week absence but this trip could still be sharp for him. That certainly isn’t the case for UNDERCOVER AGENT who fought on doggedly that day. The brilliant filly SNOWDANCE narrowly lost to the latter in KZN and that brings her into the reckoning.

VALUE BET FOR TODAY
Race 9: PRICELESS RULER(3)
Jockey: Sean VEALE – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

This is an extremely tricky low-key handicap over the mile where most of the younger brigade concede valuable weight to their quartet of older counterparts. That said, the slight preference is for the sophomores and in particular the Drier inmate PRICELESS RULER who refused to give in to the well-handicapped older rival Meraki over seven furlongs last time out. The son of Pathfork had a credible penultimate showing over this c & d where he finished close-up behind Bunker Hunt and Knights Templar (both run in race 4 at Grade 3 level today).
