Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips from Sunday’s racing coming your way from Newbury, Riponi, Market Rasen.
NEWBURY
Race 5 No4 CAROLINE DALE (Nap)
Trainer: David Loughnane – Jockey: Richard Kingscote
CAROLINE DALE’s two Ascot runs either side of a smooth
Windsor triumph make her the one to beat in this Listed St Hugh’s Fillies’
Stakes. She stepped up to the plate at Royal Ascot to finish third to Campanella
in the Queen Mary and latterly, when moved up a furlong for the Princess
Margaret Stakes, only weakened in the closing stages to fill the same placing
behind Santosha. She is clearly better at the minimum distance, a point crucial
to her chance here.
Race 8 No5 FABILIS
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Rob Hornby
FABILIS hails from a yard that rarely sends out first time
juvenile winners but the close relative of Monarchs Glen can prove an exception
to that rule. He’s shown plenty in his work and should enjoy any cut in the
ground, a factor that needs monitoring with dark skies overhead this weekend.
Race 9 No8 KALEIDOSCOPIC (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Rob Hornby
There will be value about KALEIDOSCOPIC in this novice
stakes, largely due to the visually poor run she put in on debut at Lingfield.
The daughter of Le Havre seemed to get lost on the horizon before staying on
past beaten rivals, but was nevertheless beaten 26 lengths by the winner
Faisal. That effort did not mirror what she had shown at home, or has shown
subsequently, and she can do a lot better.
Race 10 No9 RHYME SCHEME (Each Way)
The easier going is just what RHYME SCHEME should
appreciate, and while she’s no star this is a race in which she can do well.
The Poet’s Voice filly is partnered for the first time by Channon’s apprentice
Bass who is good value for his 7lb claim.
RIPON
Race 3 No3 THRAVE (Each Way)
Trainer: Mike Appleby – Jockey: Ben Curtis
Although falling on a downward spiral THRAVE is of interest
now dropped in trip and on just a second start for his trainer. The one time
Classic hope didn’t cut the mustard at a top jumps yard, while on debut for
Appleby at Newmarket took off as if stung by a wasp and ran himself into an
early submission. Rather than take that massive defeat at face value, it could
be worth giving the five-year-old one more chance. As long as he consents to
settle he still has the ability to get involved.
Race 5 No5 KIMIFIVE (Each Way)
Trainer: Joe Tuite – Jockey: Cieren Fallon
Few horses deserve to plunder a valuable sprint handicap
like this Great St Wilfrid Stakes more than KIMIFIVE who went down by just a
head to Summerghand in the Stewards Cup and is poised to avenge that Goodwood
defeat. He breaks from gate 13 which is ok granted those drawn high have an
advantage. The other one to bear in mind from stall 18 is Golden Apollo whose
trainer will have winners this week…….he’s definitely worth a saver.
MARKET RASEN
Race 4 No13 HATS OFF TO LARRY
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Johnathan Burke
While the utmost respect is given to top weight Brandon
Castle in this handicap hurdle, HATS OFF TO LARRY could be thrown in getting
22lbs from that foe. The selection is a horse of size and substance but needs
to jump better than in his other three races over timber. On the pick of his
Flat form he would be a serious contender, and is definitely worth a market
check.
Race 8 No3 DENS DELIGHT (Nap)
Trainer: Olly Murphy – Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
Murphy has made a blistering start to the season and he
looks to hold the answer to the concluding Bumper with DENS DELIGHT. The Tin
Horse gelding shaped with abundant promise to make a race of it with multiple
scorer Ultimate Getaway on debut here last month, and is very much the one to
beat on that evidence.
