French Top 14: Castres v Stade Francais Preview

Rugby players engage in a tackle

Second-placed Stade Francais will be looking to bounce back from their narrow home defeat to Racing 92 when they take on Castres on Sunday the 7th of October.

It’s ‘Super Sunday’ in the Top 14 this weekend with two blockbuster fixtures set to go down. The first game of the day will see Top 4 rivals Castres and Stade Francais lock horns at the Stade Pierre Fabre.

To Win (80 Mins)
Castres 1/4
Draw 20/1
Stade  3/1

Castres
The reigning champions got their title defence back on track last week as they bounced back from their 16-point Round 5 defeat to Racing Metro by beat a solid Toulouse side 22-26 away from home. The result has seen Castres move level on points with third-placed Racing 92 and a point behind Stade.

Castres have been solid on home soil this season winning beating Lyon and Grenoble at the Stade Pierre Grenoble. Stade will provide a stiffer challenge, however, especially considering that they have already bagged an away win over Pau this season.

Stade Francais
Resurgent Stade had a minor blip last weekend as they went down by a solitary point to Racing 92. This weekend’s hosts will be rather disappointed with that showing as they built up a solid lead early to go ahead 10-3 during the opening quarter of the game.

They could not build on their early dominance and Racing stole back into the game through Scottish fly-half Finn Russell, who’s excellent kicking display saw Racing edge the fixture 16-17.

Stade will be eager to bounce back from last week’s defeat and retain their lofty position on the league ladder. They have already claimed one impressive away win this season as they beat Pau 13-25 at the Stade du Hameau.

Verdict: Castres 1/4
This should be a rather tense affair with both sides likely to take conservative approaches to the game. My money is on the hosts edging it by between two and seven points.
