Pacific Nations Cup: Fiji v Canada Preview

International Rugby: South Africa v Wales Preview

Fiji will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing opening round defeat to Japan when they take on Canada on Saturday the 3rd of August.

Fiji and Canada will be looking for improved showings when they go head-to-head in Round 2 of the 2019 Pacific Nations Cup. The Fijians put in a dismal display during their opening round defeat to Japan while the Canadians were torn apart by the United States.

Fiji
The Fijians put in their worst performance in recent memory last weekend as they went down 21-34 to Japan. The scoreline could have actually looked a lot worse for the Fijians had the Japanese not taken their foot off the gas in the second stanza.

It was a rather frustrating day for all Fijians with their side committing a high number of handling errors. They will need to sort this aspect of their game out if they are to atone for last week’s poor showing.

We are likely to see a number of changes to the Fijian starting line-up this week as head coach John McKee continues to search for combinations ahead of the World Cup.

Canada
The Maple Leafs were absolutely nowhere against the States last weekend as they went down 47-19 in Colorado. Their defence was porous and their forward pack failed to make an impact at the breakdown or the setpiece.

The only real positive they can take from the game is that they continued to fight until the end and managed to bag a few tries late on in the second-half.

Canada have a rather poor record against the Fijians having lost eight of the 11 encounters between the sides.

Verdict: Fiji (-)
I’m expecting a far stronger showing from the Fijians here. If they can cut on their handling errors then they should take this one by more than 30 points.
