In the statement Mpengesi gave acknowledgement to Bafana coach Hugo Broos for trusting the country’s domestic players, citing that unlike previous coaches, who preferred to select players who played abroad as benchwarmers instead.

He also commended Mamelodi Sundowns FC and their technical staff for their outstanding contribution, highlighting the team’s inclusion of eight players in the Bafana starting line-up.

Mpengesi said he has found himself in a unique position with one of their own, Stanley Nwabali, playing for Nigeria.

“Nwabali’s performance for the Nigerian national team has caught the eyes of the globe, earning him and our club international acclaim.

“With Stanley’s rising profile and international attention it brings to Chippa United FC, the benefits have been nothing but positive. Therefore, I and Chippa United FC stand behind our player Stanley Nwabali and the Nigerian Super Eagles tomorrow against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana. We wish the Super Eagles all the best.” read the statement.

The statement cause a commotion on Twitter, leaving fans shocked and threatening to disown Chippa United, whilst others have called for the team to be relegated.

Others have expressed their disappointment becuase the club is sponsored by a South African municipality.
