EPL: Week Five Preview

Two players chasing the soccer ball

Round Five of the EPL resumes on the 9th of September. Find out what’s worth backing.

As we head into gameweek 5 of the Premier League, the Manchester clubs are leading the way on 10 points each, with champions Chelsea a point behind them in third place. Fifth-placed Tottenham and eighth-placed Liverpool are tied with seven points, while Arsenal are in the bottom half of the table on six points.

The Gunners will be desperate to climb higher up the table, but they face a daunting trip to Chelsea on Sunday in the standout fixture of the Premier League weekend.

Friday 15 September

Bournemouth 11/10 | Draw 23/10 | Brighton 5/2 (21:00)
We kick things off with a Friday night fixture between 18th-placed Bournemouth and 14th-placed Brighton. Eddie Howe’s side have lost all four of their games, having scored just one league goal this season. The Cherries succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal last weekend and only had their first shot on target in the 85th minute.

Brighton recorded their first win of the season last weekend, beating West Brom 3-1 at the Amex Stadium. Prior to that, the Seagulls earned a goalless draw at Watford, before back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Leicester City. I wouldn’t advise having a bet on this game but I’m going for the Cherries to claim maximum points.

Saturday 16 September

Crystal Palace 19/10 | Draw 43/20 | Southampton 15/10 (13:30)
Saturday’s lunch-time kick off will see Crystal Palace host Southampton, with Roy Hodgson likely to take charge of Palace following the sacking of Frank de Boer. It’s been a terrible start to the season for the Eagles, losing all four of their games and failing to register a goal. They started the season with a 3-0 home defeat to newly-promoted Huddersfield, followed by losses to Liverpool, Swansea and Burnley.

Southampton’s unbeaten start was halted by a 2-0 loss to Watford last weekend. Prior to that, the Saints had beaten West Ham in between draws against Swansea and Huddersfield. Palace have won their last two home meetings against Southampton and with the players keen to impress the new coach, I’m backing them on the Win/Draw Double Chance at 5/10.

Huddersfield 39/20 | Draw 9/4 | Leicester City 14/10 (16:00)
Huddersfield’s unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at West Ham on Monday night. Prior to that loss, the Terriers had drawn 0-0 at home to Southampton, before back-to-back wins over Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

David Wagner will be hoping his side bounce back this weekend, but they face a tough test against Leicester. The Foxes have lost three of their four games played. However, those defeats came at the hands of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, which Craig Shakespeare’s side performed quite well against. Leicester’s only win this season saw them beat Brighton 2-0 at the King Power Stadium. I’m backing the Foxes to claim their second win over a newly-promoted side.

Liverpool 3/10 | Draw 9/2 | Burnley 9/1 (16:00)
Liverpool will be desperate to bounce back after their humiliating 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City. Prior to that, the Reds were in top form, beating Crystal Palace and thumping Arsenal, before drawing 3-3 at Watford in the opening game of the season.

Jurgen Klopp will be without Sadio Mane who will serve a three-match ban, but Philippe Coutinho is expected to return to the side. Chris Wood scored on his home debut to give Burnley a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend. Sean Dyche will be hoping his side can cause another upset, having beaten Chelsea and holding Spurs to a draw away from home. But the Reds should prove too strong at Anfield. Take Over 2.5 Goals at 11/20 for more value.

Newcastle 27/20 | Draw 22/10 | Stoke City 43/20 (16:00)
Newcastle picked up a second successive Premier League win last weekend, having lost their first two games, by edging out Swansea with a 1-0 victory. It was a fantastic day for Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles, as he made a goal-line clearance, and smashed in the game-winner. Rafa Benitez’s side will be looking to build on that result, but they’ll face a stern test against Stoke.

Mark Hughes’ men ended Manchester United’s perfect start to the season by holding Jose Mourinho’s side to a 2-2 draw last weekend. That extended the Potters’ unbeaten run to three games following a 1-0 victory over Stoke and 1-1 draw at West Brom. Back Stoke on the Win/Draw Double Chance at 11/20.

Watford 7/1 | Draw 17/4 | Manchester City 7/20 (16:00)
Marco Silva’s spirited Watford side are fourth in the Premier League table with an unbeaten record and a feel-good factor around the club. After earning a 3-3 draw in their opening game against Liverpool, the Hornets won 2-0 at Bournemouth, drew goalless at home to Brighton, before winning 2-0 at Southampton – keeping three successive clean sheets.

Manchester City also remain unbeaten in the league, but Pep Guardiola’s side have won three matches. The Citizens beat Brighton 2-0 in their opening game of the season, drew 1-1 with Everton, before edging out Bournemouth 2-1 and annihilating Liverpool 5-0 last weekend. It might not be that comfortable for Guardiola’s side, but they should come away with all three points here.

West Brom 13/10 | Draw 43/20 | West Ham 22/10 (16:00)
West Brom sit ninth in the Premier League table after going winless in their last two matches. Tony Pulis’ men won their first two games against Bournemouth and Burnley, both by 1-0 scorelines. But the Baggies had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke, before suffering a 3-1 defeat at Brighton last weekend.

West Ham saw off a spirited Huddersfield at the London Stadium on Monday night to help Slaven Bilic in the fight to keep his job. It was a vital win for the Hammers who ended a three-match losing streak. Bilic will be hoping to build on that result, but the Baggies are strong on their turf and I’m backing them to win.

Tottenham 2/9 | Draw 52/10 | Swansea 11/1 (18:30)
Harry Kane reached 100 goals for Tottenham to help the north London side beat Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park last weekend. Prior to that game, Spurs had beaten Newcastle, lost to Chelsea and drew with Burnley. Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to make it back-to-back victories against Swansea, who they have a superb record against. Spurs are unbeaten in 13 meetings against the Swans, winning 11 times, including three in a row. Paul Clement’s side come into this tie off a 1-0 home defeat against Newcastle. Back Tottenham to win on the (-1) Handicap at 6/10.

Sunday 17 September

Chelsea 15/20 | Draw 28/10 | Arsenal 33/10 (14:30)
Reigning champions Chelsea welcome their London rivals Arsenal to Stamford Bridge on Sunday in the standout fixture of the Premier League weekend. The Blues – who beat Qarabag 6-0 in their Champions League opener – have lost just once against the Gunners in their last 11 Premier League meetings, winning seven times, while they’ve won their last five encounters at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal are aiming to win at the Bridge for the first time since 2011, when a hat-trick from Robin van Persie helped Arsene Wenger’s side to a 5-3 victory. Antonio Conte’s men will want revenge after the Gunners beat them in May’s FA Cup Final and again in the Community Shield two months ago.

Chelsea have an excellent home record against Arsenal, while the Gunners have lost both of their away games played. Back the Premier League champions to edge a hard-fought encounter at 15/20. If you’re looking for more value, take Morata to Score Anytime and Chelsea to Win at 18/10.

Manchester United 4/10 | Draw 7/2 | Everton 13/2 (17:00)
All eyes will be on Romelu Lukaku and Wayne Rooney as Manchester United host Everton in Sunday’s final encounter. Manchester United dropped their first points of their campaign as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Mark Hughes’ resilient Stoke at the bet365 Stadium. Prior to that, Jose Mourinho’s side had beaten West Ham, Swansea and Leicester without conceding a goal.

The Red Devils will be confident of returning to winning ways against Everton, who have suffered back-to-back defeats against Chelsea and Tottenham. Ronald Koeman’s side managed to earn a point in Manchester last month, holding City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium. Koeman will be hoping for a positive result against Mourinho’s side. These sides cancelled each other twice last season but United should secure maximum points here.

TREBLE TIPPED @ 5/1
Liverpool Over 2.5 Goals 11/20
Tottenham (-1) Handicap 6/10
Leicester Win 14/10
