Bundesliga Week 34 Preview

Our Bundesliga scribe takes a look at the final set of Bundesliga fixtures for the season.

Bayern Munich secured their fourth consecutive Bundesliga title with a routine 2-1 victory over Ingolstadt in a match that the Bavarians didn’t really need to win. Dortmund’s shock defeat away to Frankfurt gifted the title to the men from Munich by default. Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are guaranteed to join Bayern in the Champions League while Monchengladbach are all but mathematically secure in competing for a spot among Europe’s elite early next season. With Hannover already relegated, it’s between Frankfurt, Werder Bremen and Stuttgart as to who will play in 2. Bundesliga, who will land up in a playoff and who will beat the drop.

Bundesliga: Week 33 Preview

Bayern Munich were made to wait another week before officially being crowned Bundesliga champions after being held to draw with top four contenders Monchengladbach last week. The Bavarians maintain a five-point cushion over Dortmund heading into the penultimate set of fixtures and with a goal difference that eclipses their nearest rivals by 11, only a single point from the next two matches should be enough for Munich to claim the title. The next two weeks sees all of the matches kick off on Saturday at the same time, a clear indication that we’ve finally reached the pointy end of the German season.

Bayern Munich can clinch the Bundesliga title in front of their supporters if they beat Monchengladbach at the Allianz Arena this weekend. Despite yet another resounding victory for Dortmund over the past week, there is little else the Westfalians can do to prevent Munich marching to a fourth consecutive title.

Leverkusen remain in the driving seat to claim the remaining automatic Champions League qualification spot while Hertha Berlin’s poor recent form has left the club scrapping for their place in the top four.

Last weekend’s set of results once again made for sober reading as the Bundesliga continued to prove difficult to predict. A couple of upsets and a few anomalies saw a surprising weekend end with Cologne overturning high-flying Mainz on the road.

Bayern Munich continue to inch closer to yet another title while Dortmund can only keep collecting three points and hope that Munich slip up.

Perhaps there is still an unlikely twist to the tale with the business end of the Champions League a primary concern for the treble-chasing club.

Bayern Munich moved one step closer to making history with yet another three points accrued at the weekend. No team has ever clinched the title on four consecutive occasions in Germany and with Dortmund unable to finish off Schalke, Bayern require just three more victories from five matches. Elsewhere, the race for a spot in the Champions League is hotly contested and has perhaps become the more important part of this season’s narrative.

Dortmund kept themselves in the title hunt with a highly-entertaining comeback against Werder Bremen last weekend in a match that see-sawed back and forth. Bayern Munich remain in the driving seat for their fourth consecutive Bundesliga title, yet one has to feel that there is still at least one dramatic twist left for the end of season tale. The race for the final guaranteed spot in the Champions League is still well and truly alive with all of Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen, Mainz, Schalke and Monchengladbach apt candidates given the quality shown over the course of the season.

Another week of league action has come and gone, Bayern Munich remained five points ahead of Borussia Dortmund with only eight matches left to play now. Both sides picked up routine wins at the weekend, Munich running out 5-0 winners over a helpless and completely outclassed Werder Bremen side. Both of the Bundesliga giants also have pressing European campaigns to attend to and one has to feel that there is still a lot of drama left to unfold this season.

It’s just about possible that there’s a twist in store to disrupt what has become the standard Bundesliga narrative. Although Dortmund failed to collect the three points needed to really incite panic in the Bayern Munich camp, a five-point gap is not insurmountable given the European pressures that the Bavarians are bound to experience. Of course, Dortmund themselves have the Europa League to contend with but that could arguably take a backseat in their pursuit of the Bundesliga title. With plenty of points still up for grabs, this could be the beginning of a fascinating trophy run-in.

Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich | Saturday 05 March | Signal-Iduna-Park | 19:30

Bundesliga rivals and giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich square off at Signal-Iduna-Park in what is perhaps Dortmund’s last chance to exert any pressure on a Munich side marching to their fourth consecutive title. The champions have an eight-point cushion over the challengers so bar a highly unlikely late-season implosion on the part of Bayern, only victory will do for the hosts. One needs to look back to August 2014 for the last time that BVB beat this weekend’s opponents – a 2-0 victory in the German Super Cup – and to April of the same year for their last league victory over Munich.

The volatile match between Leverkusen and Dortmund last weekend was, in a way, a mirroring of the spirit of this league. The aggression that spilled over was born of passion and the stubborn refusal of Leverkusen’s manager to leave the dugout was typical of the way that the football is played; without compromise. Bayern Munich remain in the driving seat for a fourth consecutive league title with Dortmund the only club capable of catching the Bavarians. Let’s delve into another week of fascinating fixtures.
