NEWS: Former Man United manager Ralf Rangnick emerges as front-runner for Bayern Munich managerial role

After failed attempts to secure the services of Bayer Leverkusen’s desired coach Xabi Alonso and a potential return for national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Rangnick has emerged as the top candidate, sources suggest.

Roberto De Zerbi of Premier League side Brighton is also in contention. However, indications point strongly towards Rangnick taking the helm at Bayern post-Euro 2024. If all goes according to plan, the deal could be finalized as early as this week.

“We want to get it done as quickly as possible, but also as thoroughly as possible,” said sporting director Max Eberl on Saturday. He anticipates a “timely” decision, hoping to swiftly reach the “finish line.” Rangnick has long been on Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund’s radar.

Rangnick seems open to discussions; there reportedly was a meeting between him, Eberl, and Freund several weeks ago, indicating ongoing communication. Thus, Rangnick’s statement in early April about his existing contract until 2026 should not be over-interpreted.

The shared history between Rangnick and Freund from their successful tenure at Salzburg could be Bayern’s trump card. Both enjoyed a fruitful relationship during their time together from 2012 to 2015. Rangnick served as sporting director, while Freund was the sports coordinator.

The Bayern hierarchy have extensively evaluated Rangnick, considering his reputation as a complex character. However, the seasoned Bundesliga coach (TSG Hoffenheim, Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig) has mellowed with age, becoming more adaptable.

With a strong scouting team, the collaboration could flourish, especially since Rangnick has relinquished some control, favouring a more English coaching approach. While maintaining overall authority, he delegates specific tasks to competent assistants.

If the Rangnick deal falls through, De Zerbi remains an alternative, albeit with a hefty price tag of an estimated €14 million. Additionally, his large coaching staff of eight would incur significant personnel costs.

Rangnick would bring his own staff to Munich, but not on the same scale. Notably, board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is a staunch supporter of Rangnick, a contrast to his reservations about Julian Nagelsmann’s return.
