A Yan Sasse chip on 41 minutes separated the two teams at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi on Saturday.

The Brazilians saw twice as much possession as their opponents in the game and created plenty of chances, without breaking down their hosts in front of a ferocious home crowd.

Mokwena’s side will now need to produce a win at home when the two clubs meet again, at Loftus Versfeld on Friday to secure a place in the highly-coveted CAF Champions League final.

“I think with a lot of humility, at half-time because the game is over two legs, let me start off by congratulating Esperance on their victory, and also Mamelodi Sundowns, as I’m extremely proud of the efforts of my players,” Mokwena said post-match.

“I thought we were brave on the ball, we defended very well, we suffered together in moments when we had to suffer against a very good team.

“I don’t think, when I watched the games of Esperance, Club Africain, the two games against Hilal, ASEC, I don’t remember any team dominating them here at home as we did.”
